Seaside ST MEDAN GC: 2023-24 Winter Tour
« on: April 10, 2024, 07:03:48 PM »
Immediately after playing Gatehouse, we made our way to St Medan for an afternoon game in splendid sunshine. The most southerly course in Scotland, St Medan was opened in 1905. The seaside location on Luce Bay directly north of the Isle of Man is dazzling. At first glance the treeless course may seem to be links, but this is patently not the case. While simple, the routing is effective. The hub of the design is a large depression containing 1, 3 & 7 greens plus the fairways for 1, 2, 3 & 8. The course makes its way over the hill to the sea on the 4th, a straight line along the beach forms 5 & 6 and 7 takes us back into the depression. Below is an old postcard pre-1971 showing the 5th green under the hill. The 4th is to the far right. The 6th is far left.

Back to the opener, one of three short holes over 200 yards. I used driver for all three! The green is set back of the bunker at the bottom of the hill.

Behind the green up near the 8th tee.

The second plays back up to high ground. The next two holes are something special. The 3rd, a long par three may be the best hole on the course. The narrow green is benched into the side of the hill and makes for a tough target. The scene reminds me of Machu Picchu

A look at the green from near the 7th green.

More to follow.

ST MEDAN TOUR CONT

Another cracking hole, the 4th plays to the corner of the property on the lower level. At some point sleepers were introduced. The hole looks long, but its less than 300 yards. The second is to the left.

A closer look.

The approach if the carry isn't successful.

Gently uphill, the 5th too is under 300 yards. Below is an aerial of the 5th showing the 4th as well....courtesy of N Carlton.

A look toward the green from 6 tee.

A fairly flat fairway can leave one unprepared for the 6th green which slopes away from play.

The fourth is a great hole! The jeopardy/reward sits at just at the right length for the majority of golfers.

You are not wrong.

ST MEDAN TOUR CONT

With the house showcased on the 7th tee it feels like the course is coming to a close. Ostensibly the tee shot is wide open, but the further right the drive the more precarious the approach.

The blind approach to the small green is as much about luck as anything else. The first green is in the background.

The green from the 2nd tee.

Two short holes complete the round, although the 8th wasn't anywhere near reachable with the driver.

The home hole is a bit more jazzed up with sand than previous holes.

Behind the green.

In the wind St Medan's par of 32 packs a punch and it is well under 2500 yards. The card can be deceiving because of four short holes, but I hit driver on three of the four! The two cracking holes in 3 & 4 provide St Medan with plenty of merit. Add in the funkiness and obvious beauty of the site and it all adds up to a winner. Assuming one is willing to pay attention to others to avoid dangerous situations, the only drawback was the wet conditions. This created some frustrating moments, but this is a small price to pay in exchange for St Medan's delights. This little gem makes my Happy 100.  2024

Well done Sean, I'm delighted this course merited an Arble photo tour and recommendation.

My father and I played holiday golf here when I was a young lad learning the game, and that experience cemented the ideas that golf design should be natural, quirky and most of all, fun. Many thanks for reviving those memories.

I’d like to go back to this part of the world and maybe a bit north for some links such as Gailes.

Do not miss Portpatrick, Dunskey. After a couple of flattish OK holes, its quite the ride. Recomended.

Shame I missed St Medan.
Let's make GCA grate again!
