Gotta love a course that has shots across the LIRR!  This is Westbrook from the Oct 26, 1896 edition of the NY Sun, laid out by Willie Dunn on the property of W. Bayard Cutting.

This routing map appeared in the Dec. 1903 edition of Golf Magazine.  It is of an actual course that was not identified, with the commentary that the straight lines and right angles were unusual, but probably presented a course worth playing over.

Sven,
Any location given for the "Unique" course?

Was thinking of your Florida threads when I saw this one:

Jim:

No location given.  The square grid suggests it was a city course.

This link takes you to a plan that Alister MacKenzie drew for the Bristol and Clifton GC in the UK, but they never put it on the ground...
http://golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,43932.0/
...or you can view the plan at reply #198, this thread.

Here's the layout from 1895, after the club added 9 new holes:

There is some speculation in the thread that 9 of today's holes are routed as Mac laid them out. The club turned to Henry Cotton & Co. in 1949 for their 'new' course - maybe he used some of Alister's plan.

There is also a label w/a 1905 date affixed to the Mac plan, but the style of the drawing led to the belief that it was an error and the plans  came from the '20s.

An early map of Stanmore GC in Middlesex, UK.

This is a turn of the century view, but the club says that Alister MacKenzie built them a new one in the early '20s. I did check the MacKenzie Timeline, but there's no mention of a Stanmore GC.

This is a 1934 map of the private course on the 100 acre estate of J.J. Lynn (aka- Rajarsi Janakananda) in Kansas City, Mo. It was located between Sixty-third Street, Meyer Boulevard, Paseo, and Prospect.

One of the more enlightened owners of his own gc.

A. Vernon Macan -Langarac GC

Newspaper Article for 'Daily Province Public Links Golf Championship', 1939

“In the spring of 1924, the Canadian Pacific Railway Company commenced construction of the first eighteen hole public golf course in B.C. It was not until June 26, 1926 however that the official opening was held.” ( from Golf: Its history and Development in British Columbia by Hal Rhodes)

“Newton J. Kerr, town site Agent, Vancouver, advises that the Company’s Land Department is clearing 160 acres of land in South Vancouver lying between 51st and 59th Avenues and Ontario and Bridge Street. As the first step towards constructing a golf course, A. Vernon Macan, Golf Architect, who has laid out many courses on the Pacific coast, has been engaged to give the work general supervision. The ground slopes gently to the southeast, with a fall of 130 feet in the entire distance, is of a rolling character, intersected by two streams, and has a fine outlook over the Fraser River Delta and the Gulf of Georgia. The work will cost approximately $120,000 and it is expected that everything will be ready for use in the spring of 1926. The course will open to the public, with charges of $.50 for 18 holes, or monthly fee of $2.50, annual fee of $20.00.” (from Canadian Pacific Bulletin #192, 1925)”

Can you reduce ("emshrinken") the scale of the "Peachtree" course routing so the street names are legible?

I can't picture where the course was to be located.

Bob, It's tough to make out, even enshrunken, but here's the comparison;

Blue lines are Peachtree Creek on both maps
Yellow lines are Northside Drive on NW on Google map and plain old Northside Drive on the 1928 map
Black lines are Woodward Way NW on the Google map and Memorial Drive on the 1928 map

Definitely a Bendelow.  He laid it out in 1907.  The "Spion Kop" is an interesting feature.

How cool is that first tee at Hardelot?  Reminiscent of St. Augustine.

Another view of the first tee, along with brother Vardon getting ready to slap a long one on #9, after first taking the boat ride across the moat to tee off, then back across the moat to putt.

Sounds like fun! - and what a blast of a finish in the backyard of the castle.

Jim -

Thanks, Jim. I see where the course would have been. It is only a couple of hundred yards from our house in ATL, btw.

I think this is the same project that was re-named the next year as 'Colonial Golf Club'. Phil Young discovered Tilly's plans for a course having that name at the same site. There are articles in the AJC on the project from 1929. The course was never built due to the onset of the Great Depression. Much of the area was used for the Bobby Jones Golf Course, a municipal course built later in the 1930's. Parts of the tract, however, were not used for BJGC. I have been convinced for years that some of those areas, now used mostly for dog frisbie, were originally cut out as hole corridors for the Tilly course that was never built.

Great find.

Bob
