What am I thinking?
« on: April 02, 2003, 09:01:32 PM »
I was looking over my notes following a lecture at the University of Georgia and discovered the following:

Before I decided to leave my career as a software developer to study golf course architecture at UGA, my wife found sketches like this all over my work papers.  I was actually surprised when she pointed them out.

After she teased me, I decided to look through my old papers.  I figured there would be three or four of them.  They were actually thirty or forty.

Very nice distinctive hand Carlyle.

They remind me of Dr. A. MacKenzie meets Tom Simpson, but it has its own character!

Good Work!

Carlyle Rood:

If you'd just put a little wind and tilt (bend the flag a little) into those sketches I'd say you were Hugh Alison.

That's funny, Carlyle, my course layout sketches were always done during the lectures.   ;D

The sketch should be reminiscent of Mackenzie's work.  I've been developing a theory on how he arrived at some of the shapes for his bunkers.  I'm convinced he derived them directly from his surroundings.

There was a flaw in my theory until I recognized something on my Pasatiempo trip.  Until then, I hadn't recognized the role that green complexes play in the bunker shape.  Now I'm getting more comfortable with my ideas; but, they're still evolving.

The sketch is how I would imagine Mackenzie bunkering the hole if there weren't any trees or significant topography around the hole.

It's difficult finding legitimate Mackenzie bunkering.  So much has been lost over years of maintenance and overgrowth.  Even Pasatiempo has changed substantially.

The sketch omits one important piece of information, though: From which direction are you hitting your approach shot?

Great sketch.  The best (GCA wise, IMO) angle of approach to that green would be from the far left.  From the front it looks a bit like ANGC #12 (sans Rae's Pond), which we all know is a crap hole since it is only a pale version of Dr. MacK's original vision......
