Courses in Victoria, British Columbia

Gentlemen and all others,

I'll be in Victoria over next weekend. I :) might have a chance to play one time during my stay. If that's the case can any one reccommend which course I should try to play. Thanks for your help.

Raymond,

If you can get access, Victoria Golf Club will not disapoint you.  It is a very solid golf course.  I have heard wonderful things about Royal Colwood but I must admit that I skipped it on my one visit to British Columbia.  If you have a fair amount of free time, take the ferry to West Vancouver and play Capilano.  Ran does an excellent profile on it in the courses by country section of this site.  It deserves to be on any short list of the 20 finest golf courses in the world and is certainly one of the best handful I have ever gotten a chance to play.  If you do end up at Royal Colwood, please post your thoughts.  I would love to hear more about it.

A decade or so ago, I played the Pacific NW Am at Royal Colwood, and loved it. It was my first experience in that part of Canada, and I was quite taken with the course. Who knows what kind of condition it will be in, but I don't think you will be
disappointed with the layout.

You can also try Uplands. A nice course, but from what I remember, probably not in the same class as Victoria, Capilano
or Royal Colwood.

David, thanks for the info. I have heard great thngs about Capilano and as I'll be in Vancouver this August it is on my 'Hope to play' list at that time.

Royal Colwood was one of my choices for Victoria. It's a Vernon Macan design as is my home course. If I can get on I'll certainly pass along my thoughts.

Hmmmm.  I'll be in Vancouver BC in September 2004 - can anyone fill me in on access to Capilano?  Is it private like courses in the UK are private, i.e. a letter to the secretary or from our secretary to their secretary?  Appreciate the help if possible.

This will wet you appettite for Victoria. I have no pictures for Royal Collwood here, and the only thing I have to pass on is that the trees are very, very dramatic.

Bill,
      I had the good fortune to play Capilano in February and it was a fantastic architectural/golfing experience. Truely sublime!! I was fortunate enough to know a lad who works at the course. He mentioned that members here share a reciprocal membership with Victoria GC & Seattle GC, and my memory is foggy as to reciprocal arrangements with other private clubs. It is definitely worth the try, send along a letter from your general manager and/or club professional. Keep your fingers crossed, the club is extremely private in the secluded hills of North Vancouver and green fees will set you back $275 Cdn!!

Where ever you play, you might need an umbrella, and expect the ground to be soft and a little muddy.
