Nine Hole Design Contest--A real fun one!
« on: April 02, 2003, 05:20:28 PM »
Here it is:

Weird piece of property located next to a body of water. The prevailing wind I'm told is coming from the direction of the waves. Sort of a cross wind from lower left to upper right. Any small housing seen, act like it isn't going to be there, unless you can spare it. This property has golf course written all over it for years. In fact, if asked, the owner would be glad if you could get rid of it all.

The red line is an approximate measurement of 1000 feet or 300 yards. The Owner's directions are simple: Nine very competitive holes, but he wants the distance all to be gauged for hickory shafted clubs. He doesn't even want to hear of anyone ever wanting to step foot on his property with modern equimpment. He is a VERY devout purist and so are his friends!

You can make the drawings simple line or dots, but include bunkering and show greens.

I urge all the architects, including you too Jeff Brauer to particpate. If any of you have an idea where this is, please refrain so the rest can create their routing.

Friday will be the deadline, say about 12:00pm. A well-reknown professional will be the judge of the best routing for this plot.

Okay - on behalf of morons and Luddites everywhere, how does one go about drawing on the photograph?  Roberto DV and I have one thing in common: we are both stupids :-/

Help,

Mike

Is there a certain area where the owner would like the 9 to start and finish?

Thanks

OK then, I'll give you the weekend! The assignment is due on Monday morning. You can email them to me.

#1 or 9 can start and end any where you want on the property.

Mike, Take a Sharpie, and draw your routing on your monitor screen. Then take your digitial camera, and photograph it!
On second thought, don't do that! Right mouse click on the image and go to Save Picture As. Then, if you have a photo program that can allow you to draw on it, or change it to a bit map, then you can use Windows Paint Brush. Make sure you change it back to a JPG when you are done. Then email it to me.

What's the best solvent for cleaning Sharpie ink off a computer monitor?

How do you change it to jpg again?  I tried to do it in the properties and it didn't work.  That is propably not how you do it.

Please explain to an oblivious me!

Tommy,

What is the deal with the portion of the property in the top right hand corner?

IMHO, aside from a couple of one-shotters, or a very short two, I don't see how we are suppose to utilize this portion of the property.  Can you comment here?

I considered the option of putting a tee inside of the upper right quadrant, and the green in the lower portions, but I was wondering if it is prudent for a tee shot to cross over a portion of the property that is not inside the red line.  Is this acceptable?

Thanks

Do you need a club house and parking somewhere on the property (or keeping in with the hickory theme a horse-trough and hitching post)?
Keen to take part but doesn't the routing have to start and  finish somewhere?
Maybe I'm missing something (wouldn't be the first time)

Very perceptive of you Andy! But............... In this case, it doesn't matter. More on that one later! Just go ahead and design to your hearts content! Some with you Michael. If you feel the need to take advantage of the property that way, feel free and do it. The owner of the property-a quite popular fellow has a reputation of fine taste. If you think it would require a shot over the corner as suggested, then put it in your proposal.

Is there a limit as to how many you can submit??

This really is quite fun and there are so many good combinations and uniquie things you can do on a property such as this one.

A couple questions:
1- I realize it is for purists, but are these purists good golfers or real hacks?  IS this course public or private?  Will it be used for old fashioned tournaments so to speak?

2- Is there a topo map for the rest of the property?

3- Does the owner have a "par" in mind?

4- What kind of grasses will be used and what will the expected level of upkeep be?  Will it play firm and fast?

There have been some BIG changes to this contest!

The Award Winning Blue Ribbon Design will be the recipient of a signed copy of George Bahto's The Evangelists of Golf. George and myself are going to judge what we deem the best and most descriptive design for this site. We have already received some really good entry's, and with this step-up in competition, we are going to extend the due date to Friday, April 11th @ 12:00pm.

If anyone that has already turned in a design, feel free to send in another one, but make sure you tell me to replace the one you have already turned in, so I can delete it.

Justin, Just one entry per designer. You can use stick figures and dots for greens, but make sure you show the features you are utilizing, such as bunkers. Great art work is always a plus, but so is a supreme routing!

Chris,
Really simple. Draw a routing or don't draw a routing. Its your choice.

Kudos to George for the donation, and thumbs-up to Jeremy Glenn for conceiving the idea for a contest.

mdugger and Tommy.  one will need to obtain air rights or a golf shot easement if the intended line of play crosses the red line.  My home course has a par three where a creek crosses in front of the tee and back in front of the green.  The area in between, over which the shot passes, is actually part of a parcel on the opposite of the creek.  I have seen the survey which reflects such an easement.

Something to do on a slow Friday!

That upper right area is reminiscent of the opening area at Garden City, which manages to have terrific opening and closing holes.

Can anyone provide a quick summary on expected yardages of hickory shafts?  How far will a drive expect to carry, how far can a 5 iron be hit and how far will a wedge go?

Thanks

Todd, I couldn't begin to tell you, but a guess would be something like this:

Driver:235 yards with about a 195 yard carry.

Like I said, it would be a guess. But, look at the way most classic courses are designed. and then go from there. EVen the yeardages back then, on the average for a par 72 would have been around 3300 yards a nine. With today's championship lengths, I would leave the Torrye Pines 7600  yardage aside and figure them on the average to be around 7200-7300 yards.

Hope that helps.

Tommy,

Did you account for today's ball in your 235 drive calculation?  If I can hit a new ball with my "Old Hickory" wedge 130, I think a driver might get out there around 250.  You'd also be more prone to work it right to left.  You might have to trap it to pull it off though given all the torque in the shaft.  The lag swing would probably snap the shaft if you ever hit it fat.

Just something to think about.

Cheers!

Tommy,

What are we supposed to do with all the houses on the site anyway?  Are they to be ignored?  Can one be used for a clubhouse?  What about a practice range?

Tommy and Jeremy,

Congratulations on a really great idea. While the contest may offer a challenge to some people who are not familiar with software, I assure them that if they can get through it they will be able to use the site better. I look forward to everyone's clever ideas that escaped my limited grey matter ;D

Jeremy,
You can rip'em out if you want to or you can leave them in. It's up to you. More then likely the housing was a headache to the owner to begin with.

Jim, I wasn't figuring for the new ball. I was figuring for the old one!:)

Ian, This is a lot of fun. And, when we are done, quite informative.

Big drivers and hot balls are the product of golf course design that rewards the hit one far then hit one high strategy.  Shinny showed everyone how to take care of this whole technology dilemma. - Pat Brockwell, 6/24/04

Just wanted to remind anyone participating, that the due date is Friday at 12:00PM to submit your entries. So far, all of the entries look really good, and some of them even quirky, which of course is always a real big plus.

While it is hard to route something while not really seeing what the true features of the property look like. I think the outcome of all the entries will provide some really neat suggestion.
