Woodmont Country Club South Course, Rockville, MD Renovation

Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, MD is a private club with two courses, the North Course and the South Course. The courses were originally designed by Alfred Tull and the North has had extensive work done by multiple architects including Arthur Hills. The North hosts a US Open Sectional Qualifier every year and both courses had done so when they had a larger field when the qualifier took place the day after the Kemper Open at Congressional or TPC Avenel.
Joel Weiman recently undertook the job of taking the South and bringing to a new level of excellence which I believe he has clearly done. On a number of holes greens were relocated to locations which gave more options and challenges to the player to be more creative and thoughtful in the type of shot to be played. The most dramatic difference is the new bunkers which to me give the feel of those which are seen in the UK or perhaps even the sand belt of Australia. There is no intermediate grass between the fairways or greens and the bunkers and many of those bunkers run deep into the greens so a ball which is hit onto the green can roll up a slope and back down into a bunker. Many of the fairway bunkers are really big and had grass areas inside of the sand which not only looks good but also brings a special challenge to playing the hole. I did not take many photos during my visit so I have taken the liberty of using the photos which are on the USGA website to show some of the beauty of the course. While the North is viewed as the championship course the South is now very special and should not be missed as I think it is now one of the best in the state of Maryland.

Looks great. The south was always a more fun golf course than the North and the new work looks like that may still be true. Of course I caddied there and played some high school matches in the mid 70s so it’s been awhile.

I played in the MD AM on the North Course. It is hard but not enjoyable. The South Course has been renovated a few times. I'll see if I can get there.

Tommy: It is so much better than it was. So far as the North goes it had some really good work done recently and is also much better but not as dramatically as the South.
