My guess is the next culprit will be bunker liners. It seems that the default now is to flash the bunkers more often because we can (plus it looks like Augusta). Golfers love flashed and edged bunkers.
It also seems liners have allowed some architects to be comfortable adding bunkers where they don’t fit that well on the land but can be made large and flashy enough to justify tightening up the fairways or giving you something to help you with lining up your shot.
