Best par 4's you've played or seen with lake backing the green ?

Castle Stuart, 3rd Hole. Really love the shaping off to the left of the green where a ball can be kicked into short grass. Makes for a tricky recovery on an otherwise short par 4.

4 at Kilspindie.
4 at Killarney Killeen.
10 at Elie.

In the US, not crazy about the course, but 18 at Congressional is a cool hole.

If the Ocean counts, 4 at Bandon Dunes and 7 at Old Mac.

But it is a great question because my memory is that that they are not common.

If you’ll allow for a pond behind the green instead of a lake, the 3rd hole at the Country Club is as good (and uniquely memorable) as it gets.

Cleveland Heights in Lakeland, FL

Hole B-3. One of the few good non-Flynn holes there.

There's a good one (14?) at Reynolds Plantation Great Waters in Georgia.

Hole 4 at Bald Peak Colony in NH. In fact the hole is called “Lake View”. Beautiful view of Lake Winnipesaukee and some of its many islands.

I have never been a huge fan of holes that back right up to a water hazard, because I don't understand the drop rule.

The only ones I can think of that I've built are the new 2nd and 11th greens at The Lido.  The 11th has a bunker guarding the back left, but if you miss long right, or anywhere over the back at the 2nd, you are going down the bank and gone.  They may need a drop area on the 2nd, because that bank is too steep to take a drop if they keep mowing it tight.

Very we allow burns, Rosses Point has a cracker downhill par 3 in the middle of the round. Cullen has one as well on the front nine. I like the concept for drop shot par 3s.

When there’s a water hazard behind a green, even to a certain extent at the side of a green, there arises the issue of where to take the penalty drop from when a ball goes into the water. Can get a bit complex depending on the shape and size of the water feature and what’s on the opposite side of the water to the green. Also need to consider bridges, safety and ‘drop zone’ positioning etc.

Good point re: where to drop but would assume lateral hazard rule would come into play.

Does 11 at Merion count? It's a bit more of a stream than a lake, but it's right behind the green (and to the side of it).

At Fishers Island, there is water behind the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th & 17th.

The 3rd at The Country Club at Brookline.

The 13th at The Creek.

Stroke and Distance is always the simplest and most fair drop.

Where is the confusion as to where to drop?

#16 at TPC has lake right and around the back. I think the drop is often on the green or, at worst, on green-like fringe.

#14 at Pine Valley.  I realize there's a bunker between the lake & the green, but there's also a road between the green & the pond at #3 at The Country Club (which by the way was the first thought that came to mind).

Best one I can think of is number 5 at The Cliffs Vineyards. Actually more holes with water behind than anywhere else, at least to my feeble mind.
