« on: May 06, 2022, 11:10:28 AM »
Dumbarnie links have announced the closure of the course for the remainder of the month of May for the greens to recover after poor growth due to cool weather and lack of rainfall.

What's the real reason?

It’s tough to grow in new courses in the UK.  And if you make any mistakes in the fall, you can’t grow your way out of it until the middle of the next summer.

No comment on Dumbarnie specifically but it’s not been a generally great start to the grass growing year in the U.K. Mostly cold northerly winds, low rainfall etc.

Yes, not good grass growing weather this spring so far. At Hollinwell we would usually be well underway with our summer fairway cutting practice by now, but are keeping the fairways longer and not cutting so often as a precautionary measure. We did similar back in 2018 when we had a really dry summer and it meant the fairways recovered pretty quickly afterwards, thankfully!

A friend was watching the British Masters from the Belfry yesterday and reported that the pros are placing on the fairways. It cant have been because they were getting plugged lies or mud on the ball as its so dry, so I assume it was down to the extent of grass cover on the fairways, impacted by the cold and dry weather?

Cheers,

James
