Recently, I was playing with a friend of mine and we played a hole with a fooler bunker. I loved the bunker. My partner called it "eye candy". He insists that the bunker provides no architectural value after the course is played once.

What is your opinion of "fooler bunkers"? Is my friend right?

Your friend is mistaken.  The 13th hole at my home course, designed by Bob Cupp has such a bunker inside the right fairway line about 360 yards out on a 425 yard hole.  It has a relatively high lip that gives it a green-side appearance from the right half of the fairway.  It is made more effective by the fact that the green is canted from 8:00 to 2:00 and is slightly elevated.  The result is that a lot of pitches get played from the fairway depression short-right for the third shot.

I have never heard the term "fooler" before. Perhaps a better description of the situation, unless the Shivster is correct then even if you know there's room, it still provides visual and mental issues.
