Golf Balls - for an old layout !
« on: May 10, 2020, 02:29:15 PM »
What about restoration of an early 1900's layout, which has grown over and been played with current equipment and balls, but being considered as an antique golf course, using hickories and gutta-percha balls.

Wouldn't this be a fun idea ?

Wasn't this tried somewhere else ?

Oakhurst. Not sure about the balls.

Tommy:  Yes, I see that Oakhurst was bought by Jim Justice from Lewis Keller, and the course is now owned by the Greenbrier.  "Conventional golf clubs aren't used - Players - often dressed in period clothes - rent hickory shafted clubs and hit gutta-percha balls off tees fashioned from sand and water the way it was done more than 130 years ago."

It’s a great idea.
As to where folks can do something akin to it already you can rent hickories to play Musselburgh and Kingarrock specialises in hickory play - see - https://www.nts.org.uk/Kingarrock-Hickory-Golf/
Golf balls of earlier eras are unfortunately more of an availability issue than original era clubs.

For an overview of hickory golf there is the Society of Hickory Golfers https://www.hickorygolfers.com/ and from there one can find links to local organizations around the world.
Pinehurst now rents reproduction hickories for play on their courses.

Kingarrock is an absolute gas to play, on a parkland setting with lots of history and close proximity to St Andrews. I did see a group from the Society of Hickory Golfers playing at Carnoustie a number of years ago. Now that would be a remarkable test of skill and will.
So much golf to play, so little time....

We have a guy here in SD that rents out multiple sets of hickories for events and also makes gutta perch’s balls. He politely asked if could cut in front of us a few years back and hit three beautiful draws with the gutties and a 1890’s long nose driver that all went about 180 yards.
