Talks about Laurelwood rework, Trysting Tree rework and a new course, Callahan Ridge, being built inside an oxbow turn of the Umpqua River near Roseburg at par 70 ( 6 3s, 4 5s), 6300.

Work is proceeding at Callahan Ridge, located in the underside of the loop of the Umpqua River northwest of Roseburg, OR.  Not smart enough to capture what is showing on Microsoft Earth.

Drove through Roseburg from Silvies to Bandon and on my way out. I was VERY impressed with Silvies and Wine Valley and enjoyed playing Bandon Crossings back in '08. Seems like a great choice and I hope they get the play from the Bandon visitors flying through Eugene that they're expecting!

They're hoping to have 10 holes open for play next summer. Several are grassed and growing in now. An old GCA.com friend, Slag Bandoon, is working on the project with Hixson.

It's going to be a course with a lot of character. The property is an active gravel quarry and the holes are routed in different sections, some around fill-ponds, others through open agriculture land, along a branch of the Umpqua River, through a small section of trees, and it's going to be a pretty tight walk for those who want to carry. There's quite a bit of movement in the ground and the shaping is taking on a sharp, industrial look to match what's happening on-site surrounding the course. What's built so far looks pretty fun.

Just out of curiosity, is the Umpqua River likely to flood the course from time to time?

I couldn't say, David. The two holes along the river are built up pretty high above the river bed, but I suppose it's possible.

If you go here, zoom out a bit and then wait for the overlay to download.

Looks like it sits right in a designated flood area.  Perhaps Jeff Brauer can chime in...

Ooh, I have driven that road many times and always eyed a location I thought would make a cool course.  I hope that's where it is!  But I figured the soils would make it tough to build?

Tom,
I think the site you mentioned is further west at Weatherly Creek east of Scottsburg. Probably can only fit in 9 holes. Hixson's project is about 5 miles from I-5

FWIW, he didn't design it originally (Robert Muir Graves), but Hixson did some work a couple years ago at his alma mater's (Oregon State Univ.) course, Trysting Tree, which is pretty much entirely in a floodplain. All the greens are pushed up such that when the place does flood, the putting surfaces are mostly spared. Would guess that experience will help here. Looks like a cool project.

Bar Run (Dan Hixson) update -ex Callahan Ridge
« Reply #13 on: May 20, 2021, 11:36:33 PM »
Recent article says ten holes will be open for preview, probably late this summer. Shaper Norbert Painter is widely known here as Slag Bandoon.

The contest is over and the course name is Bar Run.  (barrungolf.com) will be its website.  Link to article and a picture

Bumping this. I understand Bar Run now has all 18 holes open. Check out Dan Hixon on Instagram for some interesting pics. Note the Pit Hole replica. Has anyone been yet?

Intetesting. I have been periodically checking their website to see if all 18 were open. Just checked again. The website still says only 10 holes open.

Played it today.  All 18 are open.  Just call them to make a tee time.

Very short, 6200 yards.  Weird routing.  Back nine is 5-3-5-3-5-3-3-4-4

Bandon Crossing or the drive to Bar Run??

Unless you are flying to North Bend, you can easily drop by Bar Run on the way from Portland or Eugene. Once you reach Bandon, you can play Bandon Crossing, or perhaps that obscure resort nearby.

Played there today first thing in the AM, walked and carried solo.
Nice GM.
Course has great greens, healthy, undulating and interesting.
Very wide open off the tee for the 4's and 5's.
Some wild concrete fronting  the green on #6 and #12 and 14 have wild second shots for par 5's
Cory said it is short at 6215 from the tips, and it is a par 70.
I liked it!
Very walkable.
The concrete work for the paths and bridges is the best I've ever seen, of course it's that what gravel folks do.
Grass still needs to grown in on many fairways.
lots of RV spots ready to roll.
Fun course.
It's all about the golf!
