Shinnecock -90 years between opens?

I couldn't find much info on why there was a 90 year wait between the US Open in 1896 and the return to Shinnecock in 1986.  Oakmont has one about every decade (except the 40's).  With all the talk this week about Shinnecock being the ultimate US Open course and the most complete test, what was happening at the club (or USGA) during those years?
