Safe to say that the vast majority of people on the planet have never heard of this place:

But it looks like there is some good architecture there.

Been awhile since I've posted one.  Cool view on a course that doesn't receive tons of chatter.

Nice find Joe. Took me an age to do (6mins) but nice photo. I wonder how today's golfers would react to such a tee.

That is a very early photo of the original 11th hole at Cobb's Creek.

And I'll go on record as believing it was a great hole.  Let's see what the pundits say if a restoration happens.  :-)

Neil,

sorry missed this first time. I played it a couple of times back in the 80's since which due to erosion and new roads there have been some changes. It is the Mackenzie course of Scarborough Southcliff which is very much a parkland/cliff top course not a links style. There was at the point that I played it still a good deal of Mac left in it though much of the internal parts of the course had been planted blocking the sea views which must have been magnificent at one time. By now I would think the trees are big enough to almost give it a woodland course feel. It is worth a look if in the area though it has been 30 years so things may have changed and to put it into context I prefer Filey to it.

Mackenzie must have done his work sometime in the 20's so it depends on when the poster was printed as to if it is his work depicted.

Re : Scarborough

I did a little research.
The poster was done by Frank Henry Mason. He lived in Scarborough much of his life (1875-1965).
He was quite a successful artist, with exhibitions of his work still happening today.
He designed numerous rail posters in the 1920s and 1930s. (They are fascinating.)
So I think this poster is from that era.
Which means that the golf course in the picture is part of the Mackenzie course.
Its accuracy is unknown to me.
But I'm wondering if it shows the eroded NLE cliff holes.
(Perhaps a predecessor of Pebble Beach #8 ?)

From the club website:

At the turn of the last century the game of golf had become very much in vogue and the absence of links in Scarborough was to the disadvantage of the town. Hence a movement was set afoot to provide golf links and tennis courts on South Cliff. The proposal at first was that the scheme should be municipal but later the movement became one of semi private character and a limited Liability Company was proposed in 1902. The company was formed to carry out the scheme with power to let the land to two new clubs – Scarborough Town Golf Club and Scarborough Cliff Lawn Tennis Club. After little success the tennis club later folded.

Distinguished golfers to play the course in the early days include Harry Vardon, James Braid and J H Taylor together with the 1907 Open Champion, Arnaund Massey. After a period of serious neglect and suffering during the First World War, Dr MacKenzie  of Cypress Point, Augusta National and Royal Melbourne fame was commissioned to design and supervise the construction of a new course which is, with some alterations, the one that is played today.

A new clubhouse was added in 1930 and the professional’s shop in 1937.

As cliff erosion crept towards the 9th and 10th holes, the course was altered and remapped during the 1980s with new 16th and 17th holes. More holes were built in 2002 to accommodate the new Scarborough to Filey Road the 11th and 12th holes were completely new and the 3rd modified. A new bridge linked the two parts of the course and the dash across the busy road became a thing of the past!

That last one was the approach shot on the par 4 15th hole at Steelwood (a Jerry Pate design).

Next puzzle comes from a course talked about much more here on GCA.  Who will get the course and the exact hole first?!
