Blind tee shots and second shots
« on: September 08, 2019, 11:02:55 AM »
Formby golf club features a blind (from the tees we played) tee shot and approach on its Par 4 6th hole.   I can’t recall any other Par 4 with a blind first and second shot.   How rare is this?

The 4th at Tenby

The 16th at Cavendish

A couple of holes at Manchester GC.

For shorter hitters there are holes with both blind tee shots and approach shots on many courses. If your drive doesn’t make the marker post your second shot is inevitably blind too.

I think there’s quite a lot in Europe.  These are just from courses I’ve played this summer:

2nd Sunningdale Old
2nd, 7th & 14th Royal Hague
17th Pennard
14th Cruden Bay
4th Huntercombe?

Plus the 6th & 11th at Eastward Ho!

The 18th at Portsea on the Mornington Peninsula is called Twice Blind - and it's a brilliant hole.

I'm not sure Sunningdale Old 2 is blind off tee and second shot.   I just played it and would have noticed that.   I guess a better question for the architects (Tom Doak?), is whether anyone builds holes like this anymore.   All that you've mentioned are older courses.

Sunningdale Old #2?  I don't think so.

I wouldn't describe the 2nd & 14th at the Royal Hague as blind either. But I do agree on the 7th.

Worth bearing in mind that what is or isn’t blind or visible is effected by both the individuals height and how far they hit the ball.

Not to mention the angle, and orientation, of the sun.

I think you have to go some to consider the tee shot blind.

Great call.    Perhaps the best blind tee shot and second shot.

There's quite a few blind shots at North Jersey Country Club. I'm pretty sure the 9th has at least a blind tee shot and second shot. I'm sure there's others, but it's been a long time since I last played there.

Yet another reason I need to get there.

The 4th at Huntercombe shouldn't be a blind second.

1 at Painswick is a terrible example of the idea. The tee shot is blind. A good drive for many will finish in a quarry leaving a blind second. Layup too far back and the shot is blind anyway. A bloody awful hole.
