I drove my son out to Mallaig just because I liked the drive and area from a previous, no golf, trip to the Highlands. Maybe also because Local Hero was a favorite family film growing up. Discovering Traigh was a bit of a bonus. We weren’t looking to golf, but stopped by the tiny clubhouse and took in the magnificent views. I was pleased to see the honesty box in use. Probably should have played as my son needed some recovery from the intensive single malt instruction he received the night before in Fort William. This salty old Scot took him under his wing, taught him about fine whisky and Gaelic tunes, and even did most of buying. My son was introduced to the best while his host sipped away on the cheapest brand in the pub. I doubt he’s had that many tastes in the decade since, so the lessons learned were valuable on a couple of fronts.
