CARNEGIE LINKS CONTWalking past the house, we finish with three holes forming a triangle...the perfect boozers loop. The 16th plays in the same westerly direction as the previous five holes and is just as demanding.
There is some well deserved respite on the final two holes; both reachable in one less than is indicated by par. On 17 it is more than a good bet most will finish right of the fairway leaving a thorny if short approach.
We have room for just a bit more water. The 18th swings left first around the marsh and finishes in front of the house with water to the rear and left. If one is long enough he can play away from the water off the tee and catch a productive turbo boost bringing the green within reach of two blows. Warning, the carry over the marsh is longer than it appears. This bunker is perfectly placed to cut off the scoundrels trying to freely use the kick in from the right.
That then is Carnegie. After a rather inauspicious entrance into the club from what seems like a maintenace area, the first 10 holes ease away any doubts for this is fine golf. The achilles heal of Carnegie is indoubtably the run of holes from 11 through 15, or even 16. Each of the holes are good as stand alone efforts, but as group they lack the nuance and charm of the links golf previously experienced. Still, I was very impressed with the course and think most golfers visiting the area would be as well.
