This gets my vote.  Do you think Willie Park would like the cunning strategy added to his hole?!

Paul;

Is that "cunning strategy" or "stunning tragedy"?   ::) ;D

Hold on guys. I think I see a couple one-foot openings in that hedge.  What's the complaint? ;D

What's all the fuss?  Just a slightly bowdlerized version of the 13th at North Berwick.

We are no longer the Golf Architecture Enthusiasts of Neith that go ricky-ticky-ticky-ticky. For your next quest, WE demand that you bring us a..................Shrubbery!

Funny but if you roll one through the LEFT gap in the shrubbery your ball AUTOMATICALLY rolls gently left and into the hole...

The bad news is that when you go to pull the ball out of the cup you realize that your ball has travelled below ground to the adjacent starters shack.  As I understand this hole is typically played with a red, yellow, green, or blue golf ball...

The bank board to the left must be out of view in the photo...

Paul Turner,

There is nothing wrong with the hedges except that they need to put a house in front of them. That way players would be required to hit a well lofted shot into the green and the shot making value of the hole would be enhanced.

Sale of the house would benefit the club financially so that it could go on and make more equally well conceived course improvements.

I just KNEW you would write that! :D  But somehow that wall has a bit more charm and cunning.

Is the archie who did that know for hedging? It looks a little raggedy and unkempt. Maybe they should bring another person in who can renovate the hole and put in a hedge worthy of an English country house garden.

For all of you physicists out there does a ball rolling through one of the slots behave like a wave or a particle? ;)

At the nine hole course I grew up on, some rocket scientist got the idea to place "water traps" front left and right of the green on the 180 yards second hole.  These amoeba like ponds had vertical walls and were approximately two feet deep and filled with water.  They were placed directly in front of the two sand bunkers fronting both sides of the green.

They served as excellent breeding grounds for tadpoles and mosquitoes but fortunately only lasted a couple of years before being filled in and re-seeded as fairway.  Perhaps they should have been replaced by tomato plants, in homage to the local Lauderdale County Tomato Festival.

Anybody else every seen water traps?

Regards,

Mike

Great pic!  Thanks.

I am only married to a physicist and haven't stayed in a Holiday Inn Express recently, but I still know that the answer to your question is "both!"

You mean silly hazards like hotel walls in the way of a tee shot?   :-X ;D  Or driving over out-of-bounds to reach the fairway?  8)

Blasphemy!

How about 150-yard markers that are large rocks on the side of the fairways?  Chardonnay GC has them.  Of course the vineyards lining the fairways are off limits.

Scott, I used to belong to a club outside Portland named Rock Creek.  They had large rocks as 150 markers until somebody got hit on the rebound and threatened to sue.  The rocks were replaced with bushes.

I don't recall if Tom Paul got his wife's camera to work while we were touring the George Thomas' first effort at the Marion GC (in Marion, MA) 9 hole course, but if he did, he should send the photos of some of the hazards on this course to someone to post, it would be fun for all to check out.  Some are reminiscent of the wall fronting the green at North Berwick, only much higher!  Others seem totally unique.  Thanks to Bill Dow for telling us about this gem of a course on the road into The Kittansett Club.

Wayne

Our muni is on the city wartefield.

They are draining the an EPA superfund site across the 400 yard #3 dogleg right.

There is already a pond to the right.....

They installed a stream to the pond at 230 yards off the tee.....if you go left side....it is only a 215 yard carry.

I will have to give you a pic of this.

JK

Could this be construed, as Sandra Bernhardt advocated, a "goalie"?

I knew her bit wasn't original thinking. :'(

Had trouble posting photos, but it seems the perfect compliment to the first since its Willie park Jr's Laval-sur-le-lac. A great course missing in the trees. This hedge is 25 feet and blocks a beautiful uphill par 4.
