Colt visited Formby Ladies in 1927 and provided a plan for a comprehensive redesign of the course, including several new greens and lots of new tees. The work was basically completed by the end of 1929, at a cost of around £400. Colt visited again in 1930. Daphne Johnson, the club historian, has been extremely helpful, and has provided me with a selection of extracts from the minutes proving this.

I thought Colt might have been involved because of his work on the other course. Do any dates match up?

Not as far as I can tell. The only date I have for his being at Formby itself in 1933. But he was in Lancashire a lot — the first Lytham Open, for which he and John Morrison rebuilt the course, was in 1926, and he’d have happily travelled up for the Ladies course on its own, I’m sure. It was t a hugely lucrative job, but it was a solid one.

Do you know which holes Colt changed?
