Holy Cow a Cop bunker in Charleston, SC

So... enjoying watching the USGA Women's Open at The  Charleston Country Club in South Carolina. What a fantastic Raynor course!!

How about the Cop bunker on the par 5 fifteenth hole! Must be a remnant of an earlier design.

Where else are Cop bunkers still in existence on USA courses?

It's a pretty nifty feature. I enjoyed seeing a bit more of it today than in previous rounds - for whatever reason they often showed players hitting their drives and third shots without showing many second shots there.

Pretty unique and, unfortunately (?) rare, I agree.

It had to be original to Raynor's designs, no?

Raynor’s crew would likely have been responsible for anything on the property as the club moved there circa 1923. Forgive my ignorance, but could you define “cop bunker?”

A " cop bunker" catches really bad shots. Here is the 18th at LuLu where the 2 bunkers are a short distance off the tee:

Perhaps Ran's review and pictures of the 15th will help with understanding.

Thank you all. I had heard the term before, but wasn't exactly sure what it meant.

Nice call - Malcolm.

I always think of the Cops as ARRESTING the golf ball !!

17th at Ravisloe has a cop bunker.....never heard the term before today.

I've always thought of these as being very penal for the higher handicappers that struggle to get the ball airborne.  It seems like the bunker would be better placed in or near the landing area for better players to force a decision off the tee.
