Alternate uses of golf courses

Or, Unusual hazards you've encountered.
If you've  seen the movie "Casino" you'll appreciate the photos posted.

Today, a single engine plane with a student pilot, lost it's engine.

The instructor proceeded to execute an almost perfect dead stick landing on the 5th hole at Mountain Ridge.

The plane touched down about 150 yards from the green.
From the point of touchdown the fairway slopes up to the green, which continues with the upslope.
Over the green there's a five foot downslope, then the ground is flat for about 100 or so yards

I say almost perfect as the pilot didn't yell at the caddy and tell him to pull the pin out, so the left wing clipped the pin and sent it flying.
The plane proceeded on and over the green coming to rest about 50 yards further, between a tree and a greenside bunker on the 8th green.

In speaking to the pilot, a Vietnam combat veteran, he indicated that he had been in worse situations when under attack from mortars and small arms fire.   Although, he was shaking a little as a number of golfers were congratulating him and shaking his hand.

It was very overcast, but the rain hadn't started yet

He also told me that he considered golf courses as alternate landing strips.

I didn't get a chance to talk to the Student Pilot, but I would imagine that he'll give serious consideration to taking up other pursuits, such as tennis or bowling

Awesome. I would have loved to have seen that.

Another mark against courses with too many water hazards.

A lot of the muni's I have lived near seemed to turn into dog parks during the evening.  Also, noticed a few that served as a soccer/ football field for locals kids & families.

Pat, I think you should be the new Dos Equis "Most Interesting Man in the World." Just off the top of my head I remember you being interviewed about theft at golf courses, a TSA episode on a plane, and now this. I guess living in a boring cow town really is boring compared to your daily life ;)

Hong Kong was used as the equestrian course during the Beijing Olympics.  Would have made a bloody mess I imagine but it seems to have bounced back

The pilot, spotted three long fairways, but, two of them had golfers on them, so he opted for # 5 fairway.

Pilot, 62 year old Stephen Lind, was also a "Bush Pilot" in Alaska.

Student, 16 year old female who says that she'll fly again....... soon.

Pete,

If I'm not mistaken, the 18th fairway at Pebble Beach becomes the display platform for a big car show in August.

A few more we’ve tried:  HS cross country meets; disc golf; we have a zipline, but not on the course; weddings; night golf with glow-in-the-dark balls; unauthorized sex (evidence left behind); hunting deer and other wildlife, and a launching site for hot air balloons.  We also produce our own electricity via a geothermal well and grow 400,000 lbs of fish annually.  The golf business sucks, we do what we have to make do.

I have been told but cannot confirm that during the occupation Morfontaine GC near Paris was requisitioned by the Wehrmacht to serve as a training ground for armored units.

Laddie Lucus crash landed his Spitfire on the 4th at Princes. He was a member so knew which hole to aim for.
