In 1934, The Pittsburgh Press ran a series of articles by Claire Burcky entitled "How Golf Came To Western Pennsylvania."  I am going to post each article below in this thread in the order they were printed.

Here's a brief synopsis of each article in case you're looking for anything in particular:

1.     Jan. 29, 1934 - The first course in Pittsburgh.
2.     Jan. 30, 1934 - Allegheny CC.

4.     Feb. 1, 1934 - A discussion of (a) the 1895 golf clothing, (b) an early American golf professional from PA and (c) golf balls.

29.     Mar. 2, 1934 - District Senior Golf Championships.
30.     Mar. 3, 1934 - Development of public golf courses in Pittsburgh.

Not quite in Pitt but certainly western PA is an Donald Ross course named Bedford Springs in Bedford,PA. The Springs is a Homestead type resort that recently underwent an major renovation with the golf course as the focal point. Its a good golf course with one of the hardest par 3's this side of PV.

As noted by a lurker, Burcky mistakenly claims Travis as the first two-time U.S. Amateur champion.  This honor belongs to H.J. Whigham in 1896 and 1897.
