I won't claim to have hit many impressive shots into 17 over the years, but there may not be a shot anywhere I'd like to play well.

It's also the scene of my favorite painting by Kevin.

Apparently they should charge for the photo op.  As for the golf, they can't give it away to some of us or even convince some of their own caddies to mountain-goat it....

Brian,

I was referring to Kevin Frost, an artist who is a good friend of Neil and myself and who lives right there on Sand Hill Road in Ballybunion.

Kevin helped out RTJ in two ways during the construction of the Cashen. He hit balls and he did sketches and paintings. In fact, if you ever have been to the RTJ course outside of Wash DC, you may have seen one of Kevin's paintings right near the entrance to the pro shop.

Though Kevin doesn't do a web site, there is no finer ambaassador for Ballybunion.

Do you still have time to climb up that dune behind the 11th Cashen and see (take photo) of what remains of the original 12th?

Paul,

   From a few days ago.
   A view of what Trent Jones saw. The flat-top dune in the distance is where the green was.
   When Jones first saw it, the dune had a peak 40 feet higher, according to some.
   I hope to have some photos of it soon.

   The second photo is what remains of the green site. It has been used for sand in recent years, but had been maintained for quite a while after the new hole was built below.

I know I'm in the minority on this website but I like the cashen course. It may not be a great example of GCA but links golf isn't about the technical details of GCA.

Not sure what to even make of this comment, but one thing links golf is about is finding ground that is playable in a 30 mph wind, which the Cashen is not IMO.  Perhaps why the powers that be never chose the site for a golf course in the good old days.

Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta
