Good time of year for this - most recent rounds first - not a lot of big names but some nice surprises:

In US:

  • Williamsport CC - Case study for early 20th century architecture turning into the golden age
  • Mark Twain GC - If I was a billionaire this course would be near the top of the list of renovations I'd fund
  • Glenmaura National - Doak-0 candidate - I though maybe the second time would be better - I was wrong
  • Pine Barrens GC - Really good course and a nice day out - need to head back in the fall when it's not a 107 heat index
  • Turf Valley - Original Course - Ed Ault does not get enough credit - solid routing over nice land in good condition - what's not to like?
  • Mount Pleasant GC - Another renovation I'd fund if I could
  • Harrisburg CC - tilted lies, small greens and blindness are an underrated defense of par
  • Hayfields CC - heard that they were re-building the greens, bunkers and fairways next year, no significant architectural changes but fully about maintenance - it's nice to have money, course was built in 1998
  • The 1912 Club - Club seems to be making some investments and is a nice day out with some interesting greens
  • CC of York (PA) - One of my favorite plays - club knows what it has and is clicking on all cylinders

Ireland Trip - in June:

Buncrana GC
North West GC
Ballyreagh GC
Greencastle GC

Haven't played much this year due to back issues but the list has been very high quality. Most recent first:

Arroyo Trabuco
Chambers Bay
Sahalee
Old Greenwood
Spyglass Hill
Poppy Hills
Shadow Creek
Tijeras Creek
Silverado
Pebble Beach
Spanish Bay
The Hay

Oglebay Jones
Meadowbrook
Culver Academies
Chicago Golf walked
Shoreacres
The Loop x2
Crystal Downs
Arcadia South
Dunes

Huge spread in quality because Oglebay is such a poor course. The terrain is wholly unsuitable for the game. The other nine courses are good to outstanding.

Jim Sherma,

Nice report.   Delighted to see that 4 were courses I haven't played in the region (Williamsport, Turf Valley, Hayfields, and Harrisburg) so always nice to get your insight.  Thanks.

Summit Rainforest Golf Resort - Panama
Buenaventura Golf and Country Club - Panama
Legacy Golf Club - Ottawa Lake MI
University of Michigan Golf Course - Ann Arbor MI

Thanks to the Buffalo NY GCA'ers that provided great info from a 10 year old post giving me an idea of some great tracks in the Buffalo NY area. I loved The Links At Ivy Ridge. That is a wonderful golf course that can be extremely difficult when the wind blows.

Thank you, John.   It's a great place and any town would be enhanced by such a facility.   It was sad to see the fairway conditions of Eastmoreland Municipal, however, given the compelling history of that place.

Tim,

North Jersey is undergoing a resto/renovation by Brian Schneider to bring Walter Travis's original design back as much as possible, given the number of green(s) changes over the decades.   The front nine is complete and is excellent, and work has just started on the back nine to reopen next summer I believe.    I think it's going to be transformational in a great way on a course where a lot of different cooks were part of changes, clearly not all for the best.

The greens are fantastic on the front nine.

I’ve had opportunity to travel a bit the last two years so I enjoy posting “My last 10 played.”

Because I had such a great year I’m going to post 15 like another person did. Besides if I kept it to the last 10, the list would’ve ended at Seacroft and I just couldn’t.

Royal County Down
St. Patrick’s (Rosapenna)

I was in Europe for several weeks this summer but couldn’t make a trip there work. I think I’m going to Europe again next year and I seek advice on the best way to get there

SAS has flights to Svolvaer from Oslo. I rented a car. The course is less than an hour from Svolvaer. We, however, flew to Bodo, then a ferry to Svolvaer. The six-hour boat trip was just stunning. The Lofoten Islands are one of the most spectacular places I've ever been. The course is excellent but tight. Bring a bunch of balls.

We spent a week there a wished it was more.
