Andrew,

What did you think of Quail Crossing?

Jud, Have you played Quail or were you thinking of playing it?

I've been meaning to get down there, but have yet to make it south of Indy.  Quail and French Lick Ross are still on the to-do list.  I was supposed to go down to the area with my son for Spring break last year, but mild weather allowed our club to open early so we bailed.  There's no truth to the rumor that we bailed 'cause I chickened out on having dinner and drinks with JaKa...

That is a pretty good summation of Quail. Its fun to play, good greens. Worth a look if you are in town for another reason.
Andrew, were you going to play Rolling Hills?  I like playing Quail better, but my buddy Marc swears by RH.

Nigel -

"In-law golf" in the Evansville area typically involves Evansville Country Club or Victoria National.

I haven't played Rolling Hills, although I believe it shares an architectural lineage with ECC.

Best, Andrew

And Fendrich. Bill Diddel. Although ECC is a renovation as it opened circa 1901

I can't see that you'd need to, Ash. You nailed just about every course on my wish list.

Rick,

Good to hear from you.  Hope you are well and you are enjoying the writing.

All the courses I visited were great experiences.  If you get the chance to play any of them, take it.

FYI: I was at Inverness on Wednesday. They are about to begin work on their greens (expansion and restoring contours), as well as regrassing all of the fairways and greens. I believe they close Sunday for the remainder of the year.

Home course multiple times:

Hershey CC - West (Maurice McCarthy)
Hershey CC - East (George Fazio)
Hershey Links (Hurdzan and Fry)
Spring Creek (9-holes Maurice McCarthy)

Road Trips:

Baltimore Country Club - East (Tillinghast)
Country Club of York (Ross)
Philadelphia Cricket Club - Wissahickon (Tillinghast)
Lebanon CC (Findlay)
Mark Twain GC (Ross)
Green Pond CC (Findlay)

It's been a good year. Here are some quick statements about the road trip courses:

MarkTwain was the best surprise. I expected it to be pretty good but I was really blown away by how good the greens were. And at $23 to walk on a weekday and $26 to walk on a weekend it was easily the best bargain of the bunch.

Baltimore is a great course with greens as difficult as any I have ever putted. Fast with significant slope. Many stand out holes over good terrain. I had a great caddy named Seth who was a wonderful reader of the greens and helped make for a great day out.

CC of York is as under the radar as you can get and it was really a wonderful golf course on a good piece of land. Ross' routing made a fairly severe property a very nice walk without it feeling like a slog. Strong recommendation if you have the chance.

Philly Cricket was a treat and I can only imaging how good it will be once the restoration is completed!

Lebanon is a cool Alex Findlay course that has a lot of really neat stuff going on. The Front nine is good but the back nine is over a little more interesting terrain and is very good. There are so many fun shots that I did not respect how difficult it is the first bunch of times I've played it.

Green Pond is a public Alex Findlay course in Bethlehem, PA. The land is not too interesting but the green complexes are pretty good and it is kept in good shape. Definitely worth a play if convenient.

And I hit both the clubhouse at Cricket and the Barn at Baltimore. 2 for 2 on Tillinhast buildings in play.

Royal Hague - Great land.  Brilliantly tilted greens. Solid maintenance (they use sheep to maintain the rough which is awesome)

Hattemse - 9 holes on a small parcel of land.  Very natural.  Blind 260m short 4 a highlight.

Canterbury - Undulating land and some good moments (i.e., the moguls).  Too many different styles of bunkering from over enthusiastic greens committees.

Deal - Underrated by 1 point in the confidential guide.

Delamere Forest - Would be better known if near London.  Excellent routing and a 'play every day' course.

Prestwick - Special place.  Ran's write up is perfect.

Balgownie - Very narrow but still epic.  Land movement on the front nine is unreal.  Crosses the divide between a championship course and still being fun.

Cruden Bay - Less mental second time around.

Carnoustie - Land more undulating than I remember around the clubhouse end of the course.  Last 5 holes with many low greens are very good.

Elie -  Burnt to a crisp and FUN.

There have been another 8 or so on this trip, but as at tonight that's the last ten.

I've been very fortunate this summer getting in some great golf! In order from most recent going backwards:

Sleepy Hollow CC
Winged Foot (East & West)
Wahcona CC
Fishers Island Club
Pine Valley
Bethpage (Black)
Biltmore Forest CC
St Andrews Old Course
St Andrews New Course
Kingsbarns

Really enjoyed Sleepy Hollow. One of the least recognized great courses in Westchester County...

Stemming from Mac's recent thread, someone made the comment that most of the folks on here generally play average courses.

Might as well take a survey.  What are the last ten courses you played?

Mine:

Ravisloe - 5
Thunderhawk - 5
Butler - 7
Shepherd's Crook - 6
Skokie - 7
Barnbougle Dunes - 9
Barnbougle Lost Farm - 8
Yarra Yarra - 6
St. Andrew's Beach - 8
Royal Melbourne West - 9

If I gave it a 10, there wouldn't be any room to rate the composite course higher.
