First off, Greg.  I do, indeed, find your list exciting/interesting.  Carloina Golf Club has caught my interest.  How do you compare it to Pine Needles, for instance.

Secondly, Brian.  No, I didn't mean to imply that at all.  I was floored by how good the Bandon Resort as a whole was.  Old Mac is, thus far, my favorite US course.  Bandon Dunes and Pac Dunes are in my top 25 and all of the courses at the resort are in my Top 50 personal favorites.  But I haven't been all over the world yet.  I haven't been to Ireland, Australia, or England for example.  And for me to hear you say how much you like Bandon is very much a compliment to the resort.

Ross:

What's your take on Mystic Hills?

As has already been mentioned, its a nice, family-run course. New ownership as of a year or two ago who is really committed to it. A little easier than the typical Dye until you get to the greens, many of which were personally shaped by P.B. and can be pretty wild. The front 9 has few trees and is more links style, while the back goes through some wooded and marshy areas. Probably the best deal I know of on Mondays, where its $20 to play, including cart! I spend part of the summer in that neck of the woods, so let me know if you're planning to stop by and we can meet up.

What are your thoughts on Shooting Star?  Would it be worth a trip for someone from Atlanta, GA to make just to play Shooting Star?

Mac,
I enjoyed Shooting Star. Wonderful experience and a very private club. Facilities were exceptional. A significant amount of dirt was moved to create the holes. There are some great risk, reward propositions given by Fazio.  Always an easy route to fairways but also a way to challenge bunker carries or hazards to shorten holes.  Driving around the periphery in Teton Village you would never know the course existed and was as dramatic as it is. I can't speak to other golf courses In the Jackson area, so from Atlanta going all that way for one course would be tough.

Mac,

You know I'm a big fan of Shooting Star, but I'm not sure it's worth the trip just to see it. While I think it deserves its place as top-25 modern, I don't think you'll really learn anything from seeing it (though you will certainly enjoy playing it).

Nothing else in Jackson is even close to the same quality.  Huntsman Springs is second.

I started a thread on the courses of Jackson, WY and will post a photo tour of Shooting Star next.  http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,49672.0.html

I don't think there are many courses worth flying across the country for, assuming its "fly, golf, fly back." I think the comments are posted are about right. I think its a legitimate top 100 course for the US, AND I think there's enough around it to be worth the trip, but not just by itself. The area is stunning.

My last ten, since I'm posting anyway:
Forest Creek South
Forest Creek North
Tot Hill Farm
Dormie Club
Eagle Point
Pine Needles
Tobacco Road
Pinehurst #2
Oak Tree National
The Patriot

Andy...I am interested in hearing your thoughts on Eagle Point.  Top 100 to you?  What are its strengths/weaknesses?  For reference, what are your Top 5 favorites?

Top 5 of those 10 would be Dormie, Pinehurst #2, Oak Tree, Tobacco Road, and The Patriot. The first three I think are Top 100 courses, but there's very little gap between TR and Patriot at 4/5 and Eagle Point and Forest Creek North at 6/7. I like uniqueness, so Tobacco Road gets a solid bump for that.

Eagle Point specifically is a solid Fazio. It admittedly wins a lot of its points for conditioning (as good as anything I've ever seen) and a pretty setting near the coast. However, there's a bunch of good holes too, including the par five 6th which has a nice angled creek that creates risk/reward propositions on the tee and for players going for the green. You have to make the decision off the tee whether to hit driver and advance down a fairway that continues to get narrower the farther you hit it. That's my favorite hole out there, but there are a lot of very good ones. I can't give it top 100 status, because there aren't quite enough "great" holes from a strategic standpoint to set it apart from other very good Fazio's in nice settings, but I would certainly recommend it highly. Another strength is that its very manufactured, but if you didn't know that you could be totally fooled. I noticed they have a bunch of trees that were pretty clearly planted when they built the course--they've grown quickly. I get the idea that the course continues to "look" better as those trees mature, because it does add to the effort to make them blend in. When they were new and small, I bet the course looked more manufactured.

Last ten different courses played:

Rivermont GC. (Atlanta)
Peachtree GC
The Honors Course
Maidstone GC
Atlanta Athletic Club
Berkeley Hills Country Club
Prairie Dunes GC
Capital City CC--Crabapple Course
Rivermont from forward tees with hickories and gutta percha ball
Golf Club of Georgia

Would only play four of the courses again if I was asked and it was free and can't wait for another round with the hickories!

What's the fourth?  The other three are obvious.

Gawd was my writing poor!  I meant to say that there are four courses on my list that would have to be free for me to want to play.  No need to identify those and it is cheating a bit since I don't charge myself to play Rivermont each time (though I do not feel like it is exactly free either :)).

I'll amend my post to say that I would jump at the chance to play Peachtree, The Honors, Maidstone and Prairie Dunes any time!  And yes, Rivermont too!

Imagine Golf Club of GA Creekside with hickories and gutties.  With modern equipment it is a tough slog, with old school stuff it might be unplayable.  Ugh!

Doral Blue Monster--better than I expected
Wexford Plantation--shockingly good
Haig Point--great experience...loose some trees on the first 5 holes and you've got a winner
Palmetto Hall Cupp--fun course
Palmetto Hall Hills--not good, but enjoyed myself and the group I was playing with
St. Marlo--not a good course, but for some reason I like playing it.
Druid Hills--nice in-town club
Rivermont--I love this course
Ansley Settindown--a great course for a low handicapper
Musgrove Mill--really cool place and challenging, but FUN, course
