To counter balance Mr. Doak...

Battenkill (1925 with no pretentions) (NY) (home course)
Edison Club (Emmet) (NY)
Ondawa Greens (the Doak scale has no category for this it is as raw a course as you can imagine, but the repeat plays speak to the magic of the game) (NY)
Shaker Ridge (NY)
Western Turnpike (NY)
St George's (Emmet and the antidote antidote) (NY)
Rustic Canyon (CA)
Dutchess G&CC (praised by Emmet 1897-1926) (NY)
Fairways at Halfmoon (NY)
Saratoga Lake (NY)

1 datum in support of the premise.

And if any of you homos PM me for access to Battenkill...I'll kill you.

Francis

Didn't make it. Shot 74 the first round and was four over my first four. Figured I needed a 65 in the second. Made the turn at -2. Was -1 with four to go. Then birdied 15 and 16. On the par 5 17th I had 76 yards for my third from the fairway and made 8. I could habe just walked in right then. My second round was 71 with 4 bogeys and a triple. I was right about needing a 65.

An off-year in this regard - not much desire to see new things, but love invites based on friendship.

1.  Pumpkin Ridge - Witch Hollow (in spectacular condition, by the way, very firm, fast and deep green.  The best 2" rough I have ever played.)
2.  Pumpkin Ridge - Ghost Creek
3.  Langdon Farms, Canby, OR
4.  Ballyneal, which is a 10, I don't care what others say.
5.  Kinloch (the Virginia one)
6.  Stone Eagle
7.  La Quinta - Mountain Course
8.  La Quinta - The Citrus Club
9.  The Dye Challenge at Mission Hills CC
10.  The four Bandon courses at this year's GCA gathering.  What's it called?

Well I have been playing A LOT of golf lately.  During the summer here in Rancho Mirage you can play anywhere and everywhere.   So obviously all my courses are pretty much in the desert.

The Club at Morningside
La Quinta Mountain
Vintage Mountain
PGA West Stadium
Desert Dunes
Dye Challenge at Mission Hills Country Club
Red Hill Country Club
The Ranch at Moreno Valley
Terra Lago North
Tamarisk Country Club
Dinah Shore at Mission Hills Country Club

A bunch of average golf courses, but that what the majority of courses are in the desert.  It is just fun playing something different every day.

Had to go look at my GHIN but I have been very lucky over the past month:

Philly Cricket Club
Essex Fells
Siwanoy * 3
Merion
Inverness * 6
Baltimore County Club
Belvedere
Kingsley
Baltursol
NGLA

Best score was at Merion; Worst at Kingsley.

I will say that the people on this board certainly make an effort to try to play good golf courses.

Sure, there are some duds in some of these lists. But it certainly looks like most people subscribe to the "life is too short to play bad golf courses" theory.

This thread pretty much debunks the average course theory mentioned in the original post.

Oak Ridge
Bunker Hills
Windsong Farm
Southview
Minikahda
White Bear Yacht Club
Town & Country
Big Fish
Northland
Spring Hill

All in MN except Big Fish.

My next three are Brooks National, Spencer Golf & Country Club and a muni where a friend is the pro so my list will look much more average in a couple of weeks.

Katepwa Beach (Sask)
Wascana (Sask)
White Bear (Sask)
Kenosee (Sask)
Sutton Bay (SD)
Prairie Club (Dunes/Pines) (NB)
Wild Horse (NB)
Ballyneal (CO)
Colorado Golf Club (CO)
WeKoPa Saguaro (AZ)

One architectural clunker in the bunch but still not a "below average" course, just one that could be a lot better. Wild Horse is a treat - no attempt at spectacle - just one really engaging golf hole after another with bunkering that is both beautiful and restrained
