Bay Club at Mattapoisett

Tim - what did you think of the Bay Club? Used to play it often w/ an old member . There were some very solid holes out there but some routing challenges.

John-It was a lot of fun to play and in great condition. I agree there are some routing issues with a handful of long green to tee transitions making a cart a must to get the most enjoyment out of the round. There are some very good holes as you mentioned carved out of a densely wooded area which features an out and back design. It’s one I would like to play again for sure.

Tim,

Hard to fully assess as William Flynn was asked to design nine holes on a rather constricted property.  Today the course is run as a low-budget semi-private and the day I played it was super-saturated from our normal weekly tsunami of storms from the climate change hoax we've been somehow still experiencing.

Some cool holes and greens but probably a Doak Scale 3, at best.

Chris - would like to hear your thoughts or opinion of The Florida Club in Stuart. I play it often as I have a house in northern Palm Beach County, and that’s the course the guys in my development like to play the most.  Specifically what do you think of the 18th hole

Mike,

I enjoyed the 18th hole and the exacting nature of the tee shot.  Which I positioned correctly, but did not on my second!  I can see this hole being very polarizing.

Chris

it is a polarizing hole. What do you view to be a perfect drive - trying to hit the small neck area on the left side of the fairway or pushing the ball out to the right leaving yourself a better angle into the green?

after about playing 20 times I’ve concluded the correct drive is to be on the right side of the fairway which allows you to hit it further but have a good angle into the green. I’ve given up on trying to hit that small area in the neck between the woods and the water

Mike,

After my ONE play, what I believed to be the perfect or ideal drive was to drive the ball as far as possible to the end of the landing zone just to the right of the hazard leaving me the best approach for my typical ball flight / allowing me to fade the ball into the green.  So I guess I amazingly hit that small zone between the woods and the water, but failed on the easier iron shot into the green.  Wouldn't say I loved or hated the hole; however, it was definitely a tester to finish the round!  I think that's a good thing.

Chris,

And if anyone else on this board had played Pinecroft I'd figure it was you!   :D    I was just there this past Saturday afternoon for nine holes in between family stuff as we bought a house recently about 25 mins away in Horseheads, NY.   Reminded me of the modest, family-oriented courses I grew up playing in NE PA.

Mohonk was a hoot and my quirkmeter was pegging at 11!   Of course, knowing not everyone shares my taste for frankly weird golf holes and historic ramblings I couldn't give it more than a 2.5 on the Doak Scale but it's probably a 5 or 6 on the fun-meter.  No one would ever consider building holes like that today, that's for sure.

I've played a few nine-hole courses in that area and have some others planned.   The best and biggest surprise was Twaalfskill which was built in 1902 yet it's a legit Doak Scale 5, easily.   Rip Van Winkle is a bit flat, but some low-key, Ross-ian fun.   Last year Mike Worth and I played Twaalfskill, Innes, and Sullivan County (now run by Tom Coyne) in one day, and are planning something similar next time he's back up in his hometown.

Courses under consideration include Dutcher, Hotchkiss School, Dinsmore, and Dutchess, and possibly something near Poughkeepsie like College Hill or Vassar.   Oh, and I'm dying to get to Copake, no matter who designed it.  Ditto McGregor Links.

Chris Blakely -  Re: Florida Club 18 - i’m not sure the iron shot from the tiny landing area in between the woods and the lake is an easier shot. The best that could be said is that it’s 10 to 15 yard shorter than the other approach but that doesn’t make it better

The thing that’s weird about putting the ball in the best spot on the right side of the fairway is you have to play a pretty big slice to get it over there. Then even with a well place drive as far up that fairway as you want to risk it, one is still left with 180 yards into the green.

I opted to not add Doak scale scores to my last 10. If I had, Royal Worlington would have been a 6.5 and I’m sure that would’ve triggered a food fight lol.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mike, looking at the list, I would do Hotchkiss and Copake as a 27 hole day with not too much driving in between.

My dance card is filling up so this may not happen until late September.  All of a sudden, I learned I may be playing Naval Academy, The Creek, Meadow Brook, Atlantic City, and Philly Cricket -- all before summer's end.  From 10-20 Sep I'm playing in Scotland - Boat of Garten, Royal Dornoch (both courses), Tain, Portmahomack, Nairn, Old Petty, Castle Stuart, Moray (perhaps both courses), and Blairgowrie.  With that lineup, Dinsmore, Dutchers, and Dutchess aren't as appealing as Hotchkiss and Copake.  Question -- is Copake an Emmett?

I'm in my hometown in the Catskills by Hunter Mountain this Sunday-Monday and no other trips planned -not that I won't make one but none planned.  If I play golf at all this trip, it will be at Colonial CC - the public course in Tannersville, NY.

I see from another post you have a home in upstate NY now.

Chris,

It certainly may be Emmet but I've never seen any physical evidence despite some vigorous searching.   In fact, I can't think of a significant 18 hole course created during the Golden Age near major Metropolitan areas that had less contemporaneous press coverage when it was created in the early-mid 1920s.

With your experience playing many of Emmet's courses, what's your take on Copake?

The ninth through eighteenth at Pacific Dunes about fifteen months ago.  Probably +25 on a nice day. More pick-ups than a streetwalker or a car lot.
