North East (England) - Coltathon 8-10 July - Cancelled New
« on: March 18, 2011, 10:03:08 AM »
Cancelled Due to lack of interest and clash of dates

On a previous thread I asked for interest (and got some!) in a short North East get together this summer, playing a couple of "real" Colt courses and the new course at Close House, to be called the Colt and designed by GCAer Scott MacPherson.  The details of this trip are now arranged, as follows:

Friday 8 July - 36 holes at Brancepeth Castle ( http://www.brancepeth-castle-golf.co.uk ).
Saturday 9 July - 36 holes at The Northumberland ( http://www.thengc.co.uk )
Sunday 10 July - 18 holes at Close House, Colt Course ( http://www.closehouse.co.uk/golf )

Golf at Brancepeth will be £35 for the 36.  At Northumberland I’m hoping to get enough members to join us so that we can avail ourselves of the members’ guest rate (£15), if not then I think the visitor rate is around £40.  I’m waiting for confirmation of the Close House green fee but the website suggests it will be around £100.
I will research local hotels (I would suggest that people would probably want to stay in Newcastle, where demand for overnight accommodation can be high, particularly at weekends) and post details.  Newcastle is, of course, one of the top 10 party cities in the world (according to Conde Naste, at least!) so I’m sure we’ll find ways to occupy the evenings.
Please let me know if you’re interested and intending to come.  I will take a £50 deposit which can be paid by cheque, sent to:

Gosforth
Newcastle upon Tyne

In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

I hope to be in the North East in July, it purely depends on our projects and what starts construction. Give me a few more weeks when I know more information.

Mark,

Well done for organising. Does this clash with the Open or the Scottish Open ? If not I'm up for at least some of it if not all. Once I've checked the dates I'll post my cheque.

Niall,

I'm afraid it does clash with the Scottish Open. :-[

Try checking out Warkworth Golf Club, just North of Newcastle (http://www.warkworthgolfclub.com/) - you may enjoy it, love to see your Hole on Hole comments on the course as it has some fun Holes. Town’s interesting too.

In that case I'm probably not up for the Friday but I'd like to think I can do Saturday and Sunday. I'll email you and let you know.

This is a couple of moths away now.  Can I tempt anyone else to add their name?

I gather Lee Westwood is playing at Close House on Tuesday, presumably as part of the opening program for the new course.

Its a bit of a long shot for me, but it is possible.  Of course if skipping some of the games isn't an option than there is no chance.  If there is still space late in the game I may give it a go.

New plays planned for 2024: Dunfanaghy, Fraserburgh, Hankley Common, Ashridge, Gog Magog Old & Cruden Bay St Olaf

Sean,

It's a buffet.  You can pick and choose what you want to do and what you don't.  Would be great if you could make it.

Since response to this has been relatively slow (I think I only have a couple of real declarations of interest and only one deposit received) and since there seems to be more interest in visiting Adrian Stiff's course on the same Sunday, I think it's probably best to can this.
