Egregious GCA Lies
« on: February 12, 2011, 12:10:25 AM »
No, not the kind MacMoriarpaulirba fight about.  I mean the kind GCAers find themselves in from time to time.  For example, consider the lie Bart Bradley encountered on the 5th hole at Bandon Dunes...

Now, since I was blessed with both a ball in the fairway and a camera in hand, I found Bart's predicament equal parts architecturally interesting and funnier than Hell.  As I recall, Bart had a slightly different perspective.

Please post other pics of fellow GCAers in compromising architectural positions.

Since we are having a good time with lies that the Bradley family has had to deal with, here is my son on the tee on a lovely par 3 at Tralee.....

Unfortunately, he flared one high and to the left to end up here....

What a beautiful hole...looking back to the tee.

Another in a minute ;-)

My good friend Ed Oden has found HIMSELF in a predicament once in blue moon as well....pun intended for those who know of Ed's "famous photo"....

Here is our intrepid photographer at Sand Hills.....

Now I am certain that just finding oneself in this bunker would be challenging enough, but I believe Ed's ball ended up in footprint-like hole.  I believe he made a valiant effort and got out of the bunker (in more than one shot) :-)

This was a lie John Kavanaugh had last summer at Ballyneal. I'm not 100% sure which hole this was taken on, it may have been the last. He took out his driver (did you hit it left handed, John??) and smashed it down the fairway. He was pretty proud of that one I recall!

This bunker is about 50 yards to the right of the 17th green at Pacific Dunes. Ball is at shoulder height and suspended in the branch.
He swung and the ball dropped into the bunker, and one of his footprints. He's not a GCA member.

Yours truly taking his rear-based stance near the 6th green at Bandon Dunes. Hit it to 10-15 feet but missed the par putt. This might be the tipping point for the recent land slump.

Bart, I had a prefect lie in that bunker.  Unfortunately, my first attempt to get out didn't quite clear the lip and rolled back into one of the footprints I had made climbing up to my ball.  Another dozen or so swings later and I was safely on the green.

Bill, I love the Hoylake picture.  Was the ball embedded?

Pete, I guess the guy at PD wasn't wearing his Lucky Brand jeans.

This is the lie my buddy had, #8 Kingsley Club last summer.

The ball is at the base of the white wildflower center of shot.

Thank Mike DeVries for this one I had at Greywalls:

I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Bandon has a heavy influence on my photos...

We'll start with Pacific Dunes #3

And a close-up

Alan Gard on #12 at Bandon Dunes

The E green par 3 at Sheep Ranch is a thing of beauty

But a miss is costly

Jason McOlgan on #11 at Pacific Dunes

I have a special place in my heart for the right side of Pacific Dunes #1.  You can't possibly understand how hard it is to simply get back to the fairway unless you've had the pleasure of being there yourself.  Never seen it done in one shot.  Yes, I'm sure you near scratch golfers could pull it off.

Jason

Jason - different outfit, different trip

Alan

My ball at Sand Hills

Close up

And finally.... The one and only... the double egregious lie... Aaron Gard and I struck our tee shots on #16 at Bandon Dunes

To find our balls here... Touching one another!!!

Mark Pritchett's lie at Secession...two years ago.  I post that pic every chance I get.  It was hilarious for many reasons...not the least of which was seeing Mark think about playing that shot with the hangover he had working that day.  :)

Bill, I love the Hoylake picture.  Was the ball embedded?

We were playing the hole as #2 in the Open routing; this was three months after Tiger's win in 2006.

The ball was deeply embedded.  My line drive tee ball, off line right, took one hop and splat!

Luckily son David, laughing above, was far down the middle and made par to win the hole.

Here he is getting some of his own after a solid tee ball on #14 - not a lucky day for the McBrides!

Bart Bradley -

You probably thought of this, but I can't imagine a better series or 3 photos to have framed and hanging somewhere in your home.  Great pics!

I had a sneaking suspicion this picture would appear when I opened the thread.

Eric,

I didn't know that pic existed.  I hit driver right handed into the front green side bunker.  As one who has spoken out against the use of cameras, I commend you on your discreet methods and enjoy the documentation of our trip. Thank you.

Btw: It is the 18th hole and the shot was well over 200 yds.

I don't know what is worse, Choi's brush tees or the towel on his waist...

This fails to explain why it is tied to your belt.
