I love interesting greens with wild contours as much as anyone, but variety is a good thing, so having a few holes with a "boring" green is not necessarily a bad thing.  Put this on a long par 4 and it compensates for having to hit a long second, that sort of thing...

Sometimes I think we overplay wild contours...

Greens with more subtle movement are the norm as opposed to the exception in the majority of classic courses in Britain & Ireland, certainly the inland ones.

Looks like a great green site, lovely hole and perfect setting for a golf course... Where is it by the way? I don't recognise it...

Adrian.  Yes it's that hole.

My whole set:

The turf hollow (Simpson might have called it a "grip") to the right of the green is typical Colt shaping.  See Swinley and Edgbaston for other good examples.

I never see this kind of green on a modern course.

I guess clients want something flashier?

  I like the bunker on the left.It looks like the green slopes left to right and you can bounce one in so I bet that bunker gets alot of play.I don't think there is alot of demand these days for greens without drama.

I suspect part of the reason is that you don't see many inland courses built with native soil greens anymore and it's a lot easier to slightly raise a USGA style green than to dig down the foot and a half and try to lay it at grade...

Also, tilts seem to have disappeared... to be replaced wholesale by waves...
