And some absolutely stellar detailing. What a wonderful experience.

Very nice tour. Glad you had an enjoyable experience.

Which hole is this in the above photo?

Thanks, Rees. Looked that way but I wasn't familiar with seeing so much brush on that sand "hill" in the background. Must be seasonal.

Yes gents,
18 on Red. Also displaying the one design flaw on the course! (For me anyway). Plays direct into the setting sun. It's a disaster!!! (ish!)

Marty,

We played # 18 Red as the sun was setting and we had a good deal of pride riding on the outcome.

Yes, at this time of year, at 5:30-5:45 the sun angles toward you, but, it's not the end of the world.

This hole location? Is it as big a sucker position as it looks. For me this must be hit it in the hollow of the Biarritz and hope for a two putt.

Marc,

The hole was cut up front on two of the three days that I was there.

If my opponent didn't hit it to about 15 feet, I would agree with you, but, once he did, I couldn't afford to hit it into the swale.
I thinned my iron and missed by not more than 3 inches hitting a perfect shot.
Alas, the ball rolled back into the fronting bunker.

It's a pretty neat hole with plenty of variety

With very firm greens, that front hole location is challenging.

Part,
Agreed. It was only a little uncomfortable. If that was the worst flaw I could find, the rest was marvellous!!!

Not really,

With the greens as firm as they were and the hole cut up front, I thought that I could get a bunker shot closer than a putt from the swale, and if I hadn't caught it a shade thin, I've got a birdie putt inside of 10 feet.

In the context of the match, it was the right play.

You wouldn't believe how we lost the match.

Halved # 16, enter # 17 two down.

My partner and I hit very good drives.
Our opponents, one in the left rough, the other short, but, in the fairway.

The opponent in the left rough hits it right of the green, he's going to make bogey.
The opponent short in the fairway totally blades his iron, but, the course is playing fast and firm, so it rolls and rolls and rolls up onto the green 40 feet from the hole.
I hit it 20 feet.
My partner hits a perfect wedge with lots of RPM's right at the hole.............. and..............
He hits the flagstick about a foot above the hole, wherein his ball backs up, 42 feet, right behind our opponent's ball.

Rodney Dangerfield was right, it ain't a fair game.

Great pictures and review. If I wasn't looking forward to being back on the Red in January, I really am now!

The par threes at Steamsong are simply outstanding as the pictures represent.
One of the more understated of the bunch, number 11 on the Blue is one of my favourites, great green and surrounds.

That hole reminded of heathland courses south of London.  Great left to right slope with a bunker left front.

That's #10.

Nice to hear this comment as there was little to nothing to work with when we started that hole; it is entirely created, apart from the little belt of trees we cleared through in front of the tee.

Great hole to me, I love that "straight forward" but challenging sort of par three.
Ni thrills or frills, just good shot making required.

I thought 16 on the blue was brute.  Got up and down from 10 yards off the left side. I'll take par there and run to 17 every day.  Great green for a long uphill par 3.

Agreed...a great hole. I managed to squeak past the bunker short and left a nice uphill approach to the pin. One of very few up and downs I made on either course ::)

I am probably an example of the type of golfer Mike Young is referring to.

My first recourse at my home club and most other places I play is something like an "aerial game" whenever I have a 6-iron or shorter in my hand. But with no clubhead speed and a very low trajectory I have no choice but to let the ball run up on most shots over 150 yards, regardless of whether the course supports it or not. Can't live without the extra distance, can't stop longer shot on the green (unless it's squishy soft).

There's no strategy or thought involved. I'm not smarter than my buddy who hits hits his five 5-iron into the stratosphere and stops it on a dime from 190 yards. I may be smart enough to know that my 5-iron isn't going but 150 and then it isn't going to stop with less than 5-10 yards of rollout but that ain't strategic thinking. It's a limitation of my golf swing. And my high clubhead speed friend isn't an idiot and he isn't missing the point. His best way to get the ball near the hole from 190 is to hit a moon-ball 5-iron that lands right where he wants it.

When I go on my yearly UK golf trips, I generally score better on links or firm and dry heathland courses than I would on a course of similar length and complexity back home. Not because I'm smart or strategic (although I do know more about playing in those conditions than I did a decade ago) but because the courses are designed to accommodate the shots I have no choice but to play. Absent big winds or extremely severe course setups, just doing what comes naturally to a weak-hitting bogey golfer gets a favorable bounce far more often than on a parkland Bermuda setup back home.
