As a Cincinnati native, Joe Bausch shared a July 7, 1895 The Cincinnati Enquirer article with me last month that he had stumbled upon during some of his research. The article included the below routing of the "Longworth Golf Links."

While Longworth is a name synonymous with Cincinnati, I had never heard of a Longworth Golf Links and had to do a little more digging. Although the article didn't mention a specific location of the course, the routing did label an intersection: Cowards, which does not exist anymore, and Grandin, which, while long, is where the current Cincinnati Country Club is located.

Tom Cecil schooled me on some CCC history and mailed me a copy of the CCC history book and mentioned that Cincinnati Country Club merged with Cincinnati Golf Club around the turn of the century and that CGC at one time had only nine holes. By comparing the below 1897 routings and land features, one of which was an update from 1906, and by comparing the original CCC and CGC member rosters to the key stakeholders from the Enquirer article, I am fairly confident that the "Longworth Golf Links" was simply used as a placeholder by the writer (or the eventual club members) until the CGC was formally established.

Thanks to Joe for sharing and Tom for helping!

Willie Park Jr's proposed (1923) renovation plan that was rejected by the club (earlier post)

This was the way the course looked for the 1937 PGA Championship (won by Denny Shute):

The upper sketch of the Hotel Redondo Links was posted (#471) by Joe Tucholski. It shows the course as it existed in 1900.

The lower sketch shows the 'new' course in 1903.

Once again, road crossings were not a roadblock to creating golf courses back then.

In 1934 Lawson Little won The US Amateur at Brookline and The Amateur at Prestwick. In 1935 he won The US Amateur at Cleveland and
The Amateur at Royal Lytham & St.Annes.

A Golf Journal article labeled it "The Little Slam".
http://www.usgamuseum.com/about_museum/news_events/news_article.aspx?newsid=143

Quite a feat, but I wonder: Did they call it "The Little Slam" because of his name, or in comparison to Bobby Jones' "Grand Slam"?

Works either way.  ;D

I have fixed every broken link for my contributions to this thread.  Whew, that's 2 hours of my life I can't have back!

Some of the posts on the first 12 pages or so are quite good, IMHO.

Joe, was this located where the Target currently is?

Very interesting to see that the course was later re-routed.

There's also a 1920 map of Inverness posted by Joe Bausch at post 205.

A few days ago I found a map of Merion when I was putting together something about Gene Sarazen. When I saw it I kept thinking why does it look so familiar  ???.
I was getting ready to post it just now and I checked the index of courses that Ed has listed on the first page of this thread. Lo and behold, there was the same basic photo posted by Joe Bausch, only his was from the 1930 Amateur and this is from the 1934 Open.

I think it's a worthwhile addition as the accompanying article describes some of the stiffening up of Merion for the Pros.

Here's Joe's from '30:

and here's the 1934 photo:

Click on this link if you want to read about some of the changes that the club, either alone or in concert w/the USGA, thought were necessary to corral the Pros:
