Ed,

I think this is a wonderfully valuable thread.

Is there any way it can be preserved in one of the other GCA sections, like "Art & Architecture, so that it's easier to access, instead of going back and trying to find it in old discussion group threads ?

Pat, I suppose that is a question for Ran.  However, you can bookmark this thread on your browser for easy access in the future regardless of whether Ran links it elsewhere on the site.

I haven't had as much time to keep up with the DG as I used to.  I'm sure I miss things that are posted on threads from time to time.  So if anyone spots anything that would be appropriate for this thread, please post it here or send me a message of where I can find it so that I can do so myself.  Thanks in advance!

Ed:

I never noticed before but it appears that this drawing does not accurately depict 18 and 9.  I have always found 18 a bit awkward and I believe that Bobby Weed has submitted some potential changes for 18 to the club.

Very interesting!

Help me out Chicago historians!

This article from the May 22, 1924 edition of the Southtown Economist shows a proposed club on what appears to be where Midway airport resides!  Wikipedia says 1923 for the beginning of Midway but this article is from 1924.  What gives?!

Nice work there.

The Laramie course is noted as a Harry Collis course from 1924.  Mr. Jemsek of Cog Hill fame began his golf career caddying at Laramie.

I'm guessing that the land that the course sat on was (a) either located just south of the current boundary of the airport or (b) consumed by the airport at some point during one of its expansions.

Is that an island green (10) and tee (11) in the Gulf of Mexico?

Dev Emmett's designs continue to impress me. I've not played any of his courses, but on paper they look terrific.

In particular see Queen's Valley Golf Club, Kew Valley, NY [NLE] above.

Thanks for this Joe.

Laramie, later called Chicago Meadows, is under the northwest quarter of Midway Airport. It lasted until the railroad line that once bisected the property, and confined the airport to the southeast quarter, was rerouted. Fifteen holes opened 6/14/1924, the other three later in the year; private 1924-26; public beginning 1927; remained Chicago Meadows 1930; closed 1934.

Mark,

Yeah #10 at Key West was an island green (which also housed 11 tee).  I recall reading Daniel Wexler's Missing Links a few years back where he profiled Key West.  He describes the 10th as a 90 degree dogleg par four to an island green situated about 25 yards out into the Gulf of Mexico.  However, he also writes that the island was really more of a mangrove clump destined to disintegrate over time (I think the 1926 hurricane just destroyed it quicker)
