Thanks to Melvyn Morrow for the following maps of Muirfield.  Many of these have been posted previously on this thread, but I am doing so again since they are higher quality images...

Jim -

It's striking how often roads and race tracks were used as cross hazards on courses circa 1900.

Bob,

It truly is.

We talked about it a bit a couple of pages back and Pat Mucci thought the answer may lie in golf's earlier life in the U.K. and that roads weren't viewed as a negative when golf was in its infancy here. Mike Cirba wrote to say that roads were hazards back then and it was thought by some that they made good ones. I was wondering why, when so much land was available, clubs used parcels that were criss-crossed by roads.

Now I tend to believe that a combination of the above is the reason, and that clubs just used what land was easily and cheaply available to them, with a few dirt road hazards thrown in for free.

This lay-out appeared in The San Francisco Call -  Dec. 22 1895. No name was given for the soon-to-be course, but its location, west of the Presidio, would put it in the area of Lincoln Park? Perhaps an early rendering of what was to be SFGC.

Jim:

I'm guessing that's the original SFGC, which became Presidio GC.  The name of the artist of the sketch, J. Hardy, is very close to the name of one of the guys who laid out the course, J. Harvey.

The reference to west of the Presidio probably just means that it was west of the location of the barracks and other base buildings, which could mean it was still within the bounds of what we consider the Presidio today.  I don't know enough about San Francisco history to know what that land was used for back then, or if it was considered part of the base or not.

New Orleans, 1900 - this is the course that became City Park GC o/k/a New Orleans GC.  The 1900 date for the map, if correct, suggests the course predates the 1902 date noted in New Orleans' history of its parks (note the designation of existing and new holes).
