Finally, 1969 plans for an 18-hole par 3 course in West Richfield, Ohio which, if I'm not mistaken, is the Old Pine Golf Course that has since been converted to a longer 9-holes course...

Adding in the Colt plans for Bloomfield Hills provided by Phil Young.

"I've attached a photo of the 1924 plan hanging in the 2nd floor hallway of the clubhouse. It was used by a sprinkler company to verlay a design for an automatic sprinkler system. What no one realized is that it was actually a copy of the Colt design drawing."

Didn't know whether to post his here or on the recent thread about courses impacted by road crossings.  :)

RAN

This is an invaluable thread.

Please figure a way to make it one of your categories, like "in my opinion" and "courses by country"

THANKS

I wonder why there were so many road crossings on some of these early 20th century courses? - there was more raw land available 110 years ago.

Jim,

That's an interesting question.

I think the answer may lie in golf's earlier life in the U.K.

This course up in Norman Rockwell land remains on the same piece of property although the routing has changed. For instance, #11 on the map is today's #1, now a dogleg left. The 18th green is in a similar location, but the tee is next to the old #1 green. That site is now the 17th green. There are some others as well.

That, and I'd guess lots of the roads were dirt with a low car count.

Jim,

Because golf was in it's infancy, I don't think that roads were viewed as an impediment or negative.
I think that they were just accepted.

Look at some of the early courses like NLGA, Shinnecock, Westhampton, Southampton and GCGC, they all had roads going through them.

As Mike Cirba reminded me in an email:

"During the earliest years of golf in the US, roadways were treated as hazards under the rules of golf.
When Richard Francis wrote in 1950 that they thought the road (Ardmore Avenue) would make a good hazard, he was being quite literal."

Seems like a good point to add.

A couple more, w/roads.  :)

Jim, thanks for all of your contributions!  I have updated the index.  Was the Walnut Cliff course for Columbus CC in Columbus, OH.  Similarly, is Westchester GC in Westchester, MA?
