A drawing of Hoylake during the Sphere and Tatler Foursomes Tournament of 1912, with the play described by A. C.M. Croome and drawn by G. T. Stephenson.   S&TFT was a professional event played annually from 1911 to 1914, and most likely ceased to exist due to the war. Total prize money - £350, plus each winner received a silver trophy which was provided by the owners of the two magazines.

Jim -

Interesting to see Hoylake at the time. There are still lots of cross bunkers. But also what appear to be earhworks or ramparts straddling a couple of fw's. Is that what they look like to you? All that had disappeared by the 1920's, I think.

Bob,
That seems to be what they are, earthworks, but it sounds like many of them are still in play:

A landscape feature unique to Hoylake is the presence of a number of ‘cops’ within the site around which the golf course has (throughout its evolution) played over, around or alongside. The ‘cops’ marked and delineated the old field boundary lines and can be best described as raised, turf-covered dykes (walls) forming low, linear ridges. Over time such has been their significance to the site that they have been incorporated into many of the holes, informing both hole design and strategy.

That is absolutely fabulous Jim. Gives a wonderful indication of the course before Mr Colt got to work. Plus it is the best image I have ever seen of how the old Dowie (seventh hole) played. You can really see how close the out of bounds cop was to the green. Easy to understand Darwin's line about how everyone slices at the Dowie out of pure fear.

Adam - I recall the difficulty of that 7th hole tee shot vividly. Every time I played it the wind was seemingly off the right and slightly helping. For the right-hander hitting a long iron it was just deathly. I remember seeing the plans to change it in the clubhouse, and sort of wondering why.

For sheer difficulty it was matched only by the second shot to the old 17th green, long and skinny pushed tight up against the OOB fence on the right. And I mean so tight you could have putted off the green onto the road...

Matt -- yeah, the old Royal green was built by Colt in the 20s. But the history of the Dowie is something that really interests me, because back in the day it was regarded as one of the greatest one shot holes -- but out of bounds as a hazard became unfashionable, so it was changed.

I remember talking to Peter Thomson about the hole. Here's my piece on the Dowie from GCA:

Great article. Thanks for linking. My hosts at Hoylake have invariably pointed out the changes to The Dowie and all seem to regret them.

One other note: I don't believe Roberts was very happy w/Braid's tee shot at Dowie.  ;)

Des Moines Golf and Country Club. I think the 2nd drawing is from ca.1923. The first is of the Bendelow layout.

Unless I am misreading the map, there are a striking number of c/l bunkers. Cool.
