This year's update...

I had to redefine how I rate everything because it was too hard to pick between some courses.  I went to a number system, call it a Doak scale if you must!  ;D

In alphabetical order within each number

10s
Fishers Island
National Golf Links of America
Pine Valley

9.5s
California Golf Club of SF
Merion - East
Oakmont
Old Course at St. Andrews
Somerset Hills

9s
Chicago Golf Club
LACC - North
Muirfield
Myopia Hunt Club
Seminole

8.5s
Bandon Trails
The Country Club - Brookline
Crystal Downs
Kingsbarns
Maidstone
Old Macdonald
Pacific Dunes
Piping Rock

8s
Bandon Dunes
Canterbury
Creek Club
Friars Head
Riviera

The most recent additions were Pine Valley, Somerset Hills, Myopia Hunt and The Country Club (Brookline).  It's been fun!!

« Last Edit: October 21, 2016, 04:44:36 PM by Bill McKinley »
2016 Highlights:  Streamsong Blue (3/17); Streamsong Red (3/17); Charles River Club (5/16); The Country Club - Brookline (5/17); Myopia Hunt Club (5/17); Fishers Island Club (5/18); Aronomink GC (10/16); Pine Valley GC (10/17); Somerset Hills CC (10/18)

You've got every course at Bandon Dunes in your top 25, except Pacific Dunes?

Really?  If so, you're the first person I've heard to put it fourth of the four.

Derek, did we talk about Lassing Pointe and Kearney Hill at the Major? You may be surprised to hear that I don't remember every conversation from that weekend.

How long ago did you play them? I never saw Lassing Pointe in its heyday, as the maintenance has really suffered over the last few years since I moved to the area. There's still some cool stuff out there, but some of the changes have clearly affected the course for the worse judging by photos and firsthand accounts. Kearney Hill gets my vote for Kentucky's best public course though, and I'm happy to see you list it.

Jason - Haven't played Lassing Pointe in probably 15 years. Very possible it has changed in that time period. Additionally I was not as in tune to details of architecture in my youth so I expect to see my list change significantly as I get to experience more courses.

Well...I really hate to rank courses, but this thread has got me thinking of what are the top 25 I've played.  And by top, i mean, courses I'd be most excited to play again ... so here in no order:

~ Cypress Point Club
~ Pine Valley
~ NGLA
~ Shinnecock
~ Oakmont
~ Chicago Golf
~ Oakland Hills South
~ Sand Hills
~ Pacific Dunes
~ Kingsley Club
~ Crystal Downs
~ Friars Head
~ Seminole
~ Bandon Trails
~ Merion
~ Aronimink
~ Fox Chapel
~ San Fran GC
~ Franklin Hills
~ Pebble Beach
~ Riviera
~ LACC North
~ Pinehurst 2
~ Streamsong Red
~ Streamsong Blue

So hard as there are some really great courses I have to leave if I pick 25 I've played that I most want to play again.  I'll consider it a working doc as there are about 10 others I could easily move in and others out.  Can't believe I've been fortunate enough to get to play that list...

Jim - I thought both were great courses! I loved the front 9 of the Red course but never figured out the back 9 after 3 times of playing it. I would love the opportunity to play them both again and could easily see my opinion flipping.

Derek,

80% of the members at Dismal would agree with your take of the White over the Red. Hang around here a bit longer and you can tote the more traditional party line. In the meantime keep the honesty flowing.

Here is my very parochial list - all but 2 are in Scotland. It's hard to get motivated to travel elsewhere to play until you've sampled all the delights on one's doorstep. As with all such lists the ordering is rather arbitrary so I ended up just asking 'Where would I choose to play if I could get whisked back there tomorrow'. If you're surprised a top Scottish course is not on my list then it's probably just that I haven't played there yet.

1.   Royal Dornoch
2.   Carnoustie
3.   North Berwick
4.   TOC
5.   Machrihanish
6.   The Machrie
7.   Gullane Nr 1
8.   New Course
9.   Cruden Bay
10.   Castle Stuart
11.   Dundonald
12.   Murcar
13.   Arrowtown (NZ)
14.   Dunbar
15.   Glasgow Gailes
16.   Goswick
17.   Shiskene
18.   Kilspindie
19.   Monifieth
20.   Carnoustie Burnside
21.   Mortonhall
22.   The Glen
23.   Auchterarder
24.   Gairloch
25.   Reay

So many fun courses, so little time. :)

Mark,

Yes I thought Cal Club was magnificent.  We played it at the end of a trip to Bandon and we all just loved it.  Kudos to Kyle Phillips on the renovation and kudos to the club for embracing his ideas, one of which was the amazing 7th hole.  I definitely agree with you that it is underrated.
2016 Highlights:  Streamsong Blue (3/17); Streamsong Red (3/17); Charles River Club (5/16); The Country Club - Brookline (5/17); Myopia Hunt Club (5/17); Fishers Island Club (5/18); Aronomink GC (10/16); Pine Valley GC (10/17); Somerset Hills CC (10/18)

This is the worst thing I can admit: I hate this thread. I always have. I hate the smarmy, self referential subject line; I hate the almost total lack of discourse and/or disputation; I hate that it's gone on for 45 pages; I hate the uninspired amalgamation of the most recent Golf Digest-Golf Magazine-Golf Week ratings that the various lists seem to reflect; and I hate that the net result is not a highlighting of joy producing excellence but instead a mind numbing ledger book of facts and figures devoid of any feeling or context or meaning -- the work of accountants, in the language of business. Yes, perhaps "hate" doesn't accurately describe my feeling; it is much too strong a word. But I do "dislike" it very much, and to an unhealthy degree  -- and like some character from Dostoevsky, I am clearly not well. Perhaps this bile is nothing more nor less than the ugly and ignoble passions of jealousy and envy. If so, I have now admited to such mean-minded sentiments, and am prepared to suffer the shunning and banishment that might come my way as a result. But I ask: does anyone have anything to say in my defence?

That was beautiful, you channeled your inner Jkava!  Since it's throwback Thursday, I'll leave you an all time favorite thread of mine!  ''I Hate Golfers''

''I don't think I have ever seen an architectural feature that pisses me off as much as some golfer who I have never met...they might just be standing innocently at the bag drop...or trying on five gloves in front of my as I wait to pay...or like happened last week...they might have all decided to wear matching hats....I've got to go shoot some pool and get a hair cut....but I was wondering...What little things makes you hate people you have never met just because they happen to be golfing where you may choose to be.''

Peter, when I read the first sentence of your post, I immediately thought you were going to follow it with a wry-like Peter Pallotta comment along the lines of, "I hate it because I see so many of you playing world top-25 courses, that I can mostly only dream of."

I personally don't mind the no-discussion aspect of the thread -- we discuss most of these courses over and over elsewhere, and seeing a straight ranking appeals to the elitist/authoritarian in me.
