Did you forget or not include Painswick?

I always thought it was part of your Jewel Box containing a foursome of hidden Gems; Kington, Cavendish, Painswick and Perranporth.

The term Hidden Gem is quite overused; most courses called a hidden gem or either not hidden (many people have been there) or not a gem.

I have never seen any of these apart from drooling over your picture threads. In which order would you visit these 4?

Painswick doesn't quite make the list mainly because of its conditioning.  I reckon there are a few small windows to play Painswick.  In the spring before the rough can grow and in the fall after the rough can be cut and before the mud sets in.

Kington
Cavendish

Perranporth

Painswick

I think Kington is also the best of these courses.  It is a proper design with some cool shaping and unusual fairway undulations.  Perranporth is probably better than Cavendish just because its on sand and the course is easily played all year, but in terms of the design Cavendish knocks P'porth all over the room and because of this I place it 2nd.  Cavendish certainly suffers from drainage issues, even so, I greatly admire the design and think it is an excellent model of where architecture should be heading.  I like Painswick, but it is very extreme; a game once or twice is year is enough for me whereas if Cavendish was that close to me I would consider joining and if Kington were that close I would have been a member these past dozen years.  I reckon Painswick's par 3s really make the design (one of the best and most varied sets I know of), but there are also a few wonderful 4s highlighted by some terrific green sites.  Other than for safety issues here and there, nothing should change and all should see Painswick at least twice  :D  It truly is a marvel.

BTW - I don't really think Perranporth is a hidden gem.  It is quite a popular holiday course.

Sheehy

I know you aren't a Dealie in the same way some others are, but I am surprised Deal isn't among your top 25.  Whats the problem?

Chappers

Not meant to be a harsh question, but why not look for ways to make Deal a more pleasurable experience rather than basically state the current set-up is within the normal pattern? Couldn't anything be done to make Deal better, or is it as good as it can be?

Seemed like a good thread for my first post in the discussion group...

1. Prestwick
2. NGLA
3. TOC
4. Shinnecock Hills
5. Lahinch
6. Sunningdale (Old)
7. Troon
8. Dornoch
9. Ballybunion
10. Pacific Dunes
11. Merion (East)
12. Bandon Trails
13. Pebble Beach
14. Brora
15. Maidstone
16. Bethpage Black
17. Castle Stuart
18. Elie
19. Old Macdonald
20. Turnberry (Alisa)
21. Deal
22. Waterville
23. Winged Foot (West)
24. Wentworth (East)
25. St. Andrews (New)

I've never actually made a ranking list before, and I notice a couple things.  First, I guess I have a strong preference for match play, and second, it's hard not to be influenced by having a round in over-the-top difficult conditions.  In particular, I was torn apart in my solitary rounds at both Dornoch and Ballybunion.  Ballybunion had sideways rain and Dornoch had a 4-club wind that turned every unintentional slight fade or draw into a lost ball in the gorse.  I am a 10-handicapper and didn't break 100 at either course.  At Dornoch, my playing partner was a 5-handicap who was an unbelievable 1-under at the turn and proceeded to card a 10 on the tenth hole.  I imagine both those courses may climb a notch or two if I were lucky enough to revisit in conditions that would allow for at least a few glimmers of hope.

I need to get to North Berwick and Cruden Bay!

Hi and welcome and you're amongst a friend here... links golf is the most "authentic" but at times most ridiculous form of golf.

The problem with "one and done" rounds like you say can be extreme weather.... had it too at Hoylake and Kiawah. There is wind, and then there is wind. I wont quote the Beaufort scale but it has relevance!

Strange beast links golf.

Sometimes when it's calm and the summer sun is shining it seems sooo easy-peasy and you whizz around with a smile. Sometimes however, when it's blowin' and wet and cold it's bloody hard going, miserable even. After a while though you develop a kind of sixth sense, call it nous, when you pretty much know when you initially get out of the car or you're on the putting green that's it's gonna be a tough old day or a really tough old day and your nous kicks-in and your expectations adjust accordingly, or at least they should. Bit like if an old chap hanging around the clubhouse or the pro-shop taps the end of his nose with his index finger and whispers something like "It's (say) a 5-over day today laddie" it's worth paying attention otherewise there's a pretty good chance of disapointment, score wise at least. Sometimes folk talk about 'personal par', a concept maybe more relevant on a hugely variable conditions wise links couse than any other.

And Tyler, when you get to Cruden Bay, take the opportunity to play the gem that is the 9-hole St Olaf course prior to playing the Championship course.
