Not everything needs to be 6500 yards with 100 yard wide fairways.

Sure, but it would be nice to have a lot more 6500 yard courses with 50 yard wide fairways.

I haven't played many private courses,  but here is my list so far (of 158 total courses played).

1) Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, Old Macdonald - Bandon, Oregon
2) Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, Bandon Dunes - Bandon, Oregon
3) Pebble Beach Golf Links - Pebble Beach, California
4) Bandon Dunes Golf Resort, Pacific Dunes - Bandon, Oregon
5) We-Ko-Pa Golf Club, Saguaro - Fort McDowell, Arizona

7) Caledonia Golf & Fish Club - Pawleys Island, South Carolina
8  Lakota Canyon Ranch Golf Club - New Castle, Colorado

Oh my god, Cary was right -- Lakota Canyon is in the top ten!  :)

Well, the John Avram top ten, anyway.  (Sorry John, it's a joke that goes back to before your time here.)

Cool list!  Not sure how you rank em but do Ballyneal and Machrihanish hang in there with the best?  I am keen to see them.  Soon!

Hart,

Absolutely! I have thought of both as my favorite at one time or another. My problem is (not really a problem) I have a new favorite every time I tee it up. :)

Hart. I'm going to answer this also. Both hang there with the very best in my opinion. I think there's a case to be made for Ballyneal to be considered Doak 10 and Machrihanish has the most amazing topography and setting you'll see anywhere.

Brian,

I know you and I and Sir Csigo talked about this when we played Machrihanish, but to let Hart and others know as well - in my mind the two courses are similar in many respects, particularly some of the landforms, the 'angry sea' rolls throughout the course, give very much a feeling of playing at BN.

Terry,

Suprised to see Medinah #3 on your list after reading so many people saying they wouldnt waste a day playing it on other threads.

It's a great course, in my opinion, but I can appreciate why others may not like it.  It gets marked down because three of the par-3 holes are too similar, because the par-4 holes are relentlessly difficult and because there are too many penal holes in general.  But I grew up playing in this area and I have a sentimental attachment to Olympia, Butler, Medinah and Beverly.  That's a little hometown bias, to be sure.
