Remember that your left and right arrow keys can be used to
scroll back and forth w/o using the scrollbar.  I say this as
today's first is rather wide.

It hit me this morning reading the paper that I suppose I
could have done Harbour Town, but I don't pay THAT much
attention to the Tour's schedule to topical all the time.  Plus I
don't want to get predictable.  Harbour town would have fit
the Friday famous course mold well.

I also think Shivas' NLE AOTD thread is an interesting
idea.  Not being a Chicago guy, I would have started NLE
AOTD with a course much in the similar vain as I started this
AOTD #1, a certain NLE on the southern shore of LI, just SE
of the city.

Back to this thing, I'm fairly certain that this aerial will not
be obvious to most of you, but I assure you it's clearly worth
Friday's #1.



As for #2, I'm fairly confident that this will be a stumper for
most of you as well, as not many people have heard of it that
don't live in this area and don't have much "golfaholic" in
them.  This type of course has been featured in AOTD before,
and I'll reveal clues later.  Note the abundance of tall fescue
around the course.  Also, I see a hole that just doesn't fit the
rest of the course, and I correctly guessed why (and who)
that is so.

I have one more thing, since I have a somewhat captive
audience.  I have plans to play 36 at Pacific Dunes probably
on Tuesday, May 21, or within a day or two of then, and I
was wondering if anyone else who has plans around then to
be there would be interested in joining me.

Just a suggestion, guys: I LOVE these Aerials of the Day --
with one exception: No, it's not the width of the Aerials them-
selves, which is unavoidable. And I've learned, just recently,
that if one uses one's right and left and up and down arrows,
one can rather deftly move about on the aerial photographs.

The thing I don't like -- and today might be the worst-ever
example of it -- is the extreme width of the DGers' comments,
which necessitates an extreme and painfully slow amount
of mousing and/or arrowing.

Fortunately, there's an easy solution -- and I'm demonstrating
it even as I type this post. Here it is: Simply type your
comments into the handy CGA comments box -- and at the
end of each line, hit your paragraph-return key, marked
"Enter." That will keep your comments to a readable
width. Deal?

When this came up recently, I did think of mentioning that
possible solution.  It's just not that big a deal to me.
Scrolling the aerial and scrolling the comments.  What's the
difference?

A hint for #1 is that is a major body of water in the upper
left corner.

A couple people on this board know it very well.

As for #2, it's an eastern course and I already knew it, as
I've heard of it for about 10 years now.  It has something in
common with the AOTD that Shivas hosted a few weeks ago.

Scott -- The difference is that you need to scroll
the aerial only once from side to side.

The comments: You need to go left-to-right-to-left-to-right-
to-left-to-right. If you have a smallish monitor, it'll make you
dizzy -- and make comments of any length painful to read.
Since those longer comments are usually YOUR
comments, at the end of the thread, I, for one, would much
appreciate your heeding my tip. Thanks.

#2 has a few, more famous neighbors just to the south of it,
one of which gets on TV every year.

With so many folks going to Barona today, I have a feeling

The two guys who post on this site who know #1 very well
are both architects.


This is the first AOTD shown for the state that #2 resides.  
The reason so few know much about it is that so few have
played it.  One of the best golfers on this site won a regional
tournament last year on a course that is but a few miles from
this one.

YAPCR alert!  The state for #2 was mentioned as a possible
trip destination (tongue in cheek) in Wayne's World.

Dan,

I don't know about the horse track, as I'm quite unfamiliar
with the area.  Based on the name of the course, it certainly
wouldn't surprise me.

I never said that this course was NLE (you got the acronym
right.  It's kind of an old GCA term).  I was talking about
Shivas' thread, then I said "Back to this thing, ...".  It would
be possible to have an aerial of a course that "stopped being"
recently, as Terraserver has aerial shots from as far back as
ten years ago.

Also, it's my mistake about the date.  If you know
what "Auto Complete" is in browsers, I don't want to scroll
all the way down the possibilities and don't want to type it in
every time, so I get the first one on the list and edit it.  I
forgot to edit the date.  I don't know if anyone caught it, but
on Wednesday's AOTD, I had the number wrong for a little
while, then I changed it.  There were two AOTD #74's for a
little while.

I like Wayne's World a lot.  Very quotable.  Can't say it's my
favorite movie.  As irony would have it, I was living in the
state at the time the movie came out.  Made for an additional
laugh in the theater.

#1 is Mackenzie and Maxwell's Crystal Downs, in Frankfort,
MI, home club of Tom Doak and was where fellow architect
Mike DeVries caddied as a youngster (mentioned in this
month's Feature Interview).  Both live in nearby Traverse
City, MI.  Doak is credited as being the one who put Crystal
Downs on the modern golf map. Like NGLA, Crystal Downs
was virtually unknown (though I still have a hard time
believing that with NGLA being next door to SH and near so
many others) before the 80's.  Now it ranks anywhere from
#6 to something like #19 in the 3 major top 100 lists.

clue alert:

"Clear"ly as in Crystal clear.

The major body of water in the upper corner is Lake Michigan.

Steubenware is crystal from Corning Glass.

Keith mentioned "crystal" and "down".

Dan referred to a race track.  Crystal Downs sounds like it
could be one.  The "down and down and down" threw me off,
because the clue was referring to #2.

Sean's "boomerang" clue refers to the shape of the 7th
green, which you can see a picture of in the GCA writeup

#2 is Bidermann GC, north of Wilmington, DE, and was
designed by Dick Wilson in 1964.  Bidermann was (still could
be, I don't know) the private enclave of the Du Pont
(Chemicals) family.  Du Pont CC is for the Du Pont employees.
Tom Paul knows the course fairly well.  The holes under
construction by the clubhouse (upper right), were done by
Gil Hanse, and the completed one looks different than the
rest of the course.  I noticed this and correctly guessed that
Hanse had done the work because that hole looks very much
like hole #7 at Inniscrone, from above.

Clue alert:

Shivas hosted Rich Harvest Links, which is the private
enclave of...I forget.  A rich guy from Chicago.  

I once worked a few miles from Bidermann for two years
back in 92 and 93 and drove by the course several times.  
That's how I know about it.

The two more famous courses nearby are Wilmington CC's
South course, which has been in (and out of) GDs rankings
for many years, and Du Pont CC's Du Pont course, annual
host of an LPGA major, the McDonald's LPGA Championship.  
I was a member of Du Pont CC for those two years I lived
there.

The GCAer who won a prestigious regional tournament
nearby is Jamie Slonis, who won the tournament at the
nearby Fieldstone Club, where Tom Paul was officiating.

Wayne's World poked fun of Delaware as a possible vacation
destination.  Was still funny to see while in Delaware.  Though
I must say, Delaware's coast from Lewes to Fenwick Island is
quite a nice place to go to the beach.    Dewey Beach in
the summer is Party Central, my favorite Delaware
destination of the past.
