I was doing some reading just now and came across this quote, attributed to Gary Player. My questions for the treehouse are:

1. Which course and which holes on the course he is referring to?
2. What are the four best consecutive holes in the world in your opinion?

No clue as to what he's referring to, but my choice is 6-9 at Pebble Beach.

Pebble is a great choice.

#9 - #12 at Shinnecock

#1 - #4 at Pine Valley

#8 - #11 at Huntingdon Valley among the lesser known...

I would have thought it would be Carnoustie's 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th after Gary Player's Open win in 1968.

I have never come across a harder 4 hole stretch as Carnoustie's. My home course Rutland Water also has very hard last 4 holes.

The other superb 4 hole stretch is the opening 4 holes at Royal County Down.

I just set the last one up with all 4 holes directly in the middle of the greens (except 11 which is middle right) and I can't believe how tough that can play.

14-17 at Cypress Point would merit consideration as well.

And much less known, 12-15 at Blackwolf Run's Meadow Valleys is pretty darn good.

It's unlikely that he was referring to any of these, but my favorites are:

6-9 @ Prairie Dunes

14-17 @ Bethpage Black

15-18 @ Merion East

For GP I am sure his four greatest have something to do with him for sure--either where he won or something he designed ;)

My nominees:

10-13 at Augusta National
15-18 at Merion
2-5 at Royal County Down (I know some would prefer 1-4 but maybe I am just weird and prefer 5 to 1.  I love have the green nestles into the hillside on 5 and you get another peek at #3 ;D)
11-14 at The Old Course with 13 being maybe the weak link on that stretch?
I echo 6-9 at Pebble Beach
1-4 at NGLA  (Great opener, Sahara, Alps and Redan) ;D
Camargo 10-13 are pretty strong too, although not a spectacularly beautiful vista

Without having played the course, I would think that 7-10 @ Oakmont would deserve consideration as well.  That's if you don't mind 4 consecutive brutally difficult holes.

I would have to go with 3-6 at FI. Besides the obvious stretches at Pebble and Cypress, probably the most beautiful stretch of four holes on the planet.

I agree with you Anthony.  Holes 7-10 at Oakmont are very difficult stretch especially if number 9 plays as a par 4 instead of a par 5 like it did in the US Open in '07.

Those who mistake difficulty for quality should re-consider.

It would've been a much more fun question to answer if it had the added words "of it's kind".

You disappoint me Mark. :)

I had you pegged as being of like mind with my suggestion of 3,4,5,6 Royal Melbourne West.

To be truthful, I'm surprised the thread got this long with no prior mention of RMW.

As for Mr. Player, surely the stretch of holes to which he's referring are on the course of his design he most recently opened?

PB was one that first sprung to my mind but 7-10, surely 10 is better than 6?

Those who provide a list should try to realize that maximum versatility should be high on the pecking order.

For example, any four hole stretch should have at minimum a par-5 and par-3 holes. Also, the par-4 holes should
be quite varied -- for example, a long and short one.

Just a thought ...

You can certainly make a good argument for #10, but I'd still easily take #6 as its quite a par five in its own right. #10 suffers from coming after #8 and #9 as the third consecutive hard par four.

Agreed. Probably better than 14-17 at CPC, 14 is the weakest of that group at CPC, but still stands out as pretty damn good.

1-4 Oakmont
2-5 Oakmont
3-6 Oakmont
...

 :)

Seriously, 1-4 Oakmont and 15-18 Oakmont are amazing - maybe the best combination start and finish in major championship golf?

There is no "finest" stretch.  Too many candidates, and it's all subjective.

My favorite stretch might be #5 through #8 at Crystal Downs, which I just played again yesterday.  I have never played another hole like any of the four.  Try to top that!
