I've never been there, but are you telling me that drains and bowls exist, in play, at Bandon Dunes ?

Golfers expectations are to play with no puddling right after a rainstorm. Shortening the distance of the flows reduces the time a course is down.
Love em hate um; it doesn't matter because they will be used in increasing frequency for grow in too. A grow in used to take a calendar year 10 years ago; now its 3 to 6 months.
Like blending fills and cuts on fairways, what matters is the grading around them. When its poorly conceived they look terrible. When the grading is done well, the are called "imaginative chipping areas." Like all golf design, its all in the grading.

Now we're getting somewhere. With all due respect, catch basins are in play everywhere on Bandon Dunes. They are nowhere to be seen in play on Pacific Dunes. Interesting difference, eh?

What you said is the thing I very much noticed between Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes. It's sort of a shame really because if Pacific had not been right next to Bandon the catch basins all over the undulating fairways at Bandon may not have been something I would have noticed--or at least not so much!

Pat, Brad is correct. Bandon has a significant number of catch basins that are in play. The ones on 13 are a great example of poor design work.  I have said in describing Bandon, a almost great course designed by an rookie and Pacific is a great course designed by a pro. The catch basins are one of several items including holes 16 and 17 and the exposed greens which separate the two.
