Toughest Finishing Hole
« on: July 23, 2002, 03:02:16 PM »
I have seen posts for the best opening hole but I am not sure if this has been discussed.

I would suggest:

Pebble Beach
Whistling Straits
Pine Valley
Pacific Dunes

I am curious as to what other think.

Just having played Las Campanas's  Sunset course I'd say after that difficult walk, even a 150 yard shot over an all water carry to a narrowish green, downwind, was way tougher than Pebble or any others I can think of.

I forgot about Southern Hills.  That is a great one.  I think it will stand the test of time like the 17th at St. Andrews.

There was a thread some months back on the BEST type of finishing hole - many of which were on the 2 lists just posted.

Dornoch and Carnoustie are pretty tough into the wind.  I'd say the U.S. "tough finishers" are harder as they are generally not designed with wind in mind - then they're impossible.

With any weather, I've found Carnoustie (as a par 4) to be the toughest finisher anywhere!

8) 8) 8)

Gotta go with Muirheads Revenge, #18 at Stone Harbor Golf Club at the Jersey shore. I defy anyone to play the back tees on a windy day in SJ and not leave this hole shaking, no matter what you make. We used to hit it thirty yards over the green off the clubhouse just to keep from making a bundle!!!!

archie:

Is the 18th the same way it was originally designed by Muirhead? You are absolutely right about making a bundle on the hole. When the SJ wind picks up any score is possible on that hole. It saddens me about the other course changes because even though they were clearly controversial it did give Stone Harbor a clear identity.

To answer the thread -- I would recommend the 18th at WF / West. Very demanding hole in all senses of the word. Unless you really hit the tee shot deep and straight and follow-up with a first rate approach the likelihood of success goes out the window.

This hole doesn't need wind or some such other outside force to make it play tough.

Also, the green is also one of the one of the most demanding you can play.

Totally fair hole -- bring you best and face this honest test!

Matt,

Love the 18th at Winged Foot, but the thread didn't say anything about good and tough holes, it said toughest. SH 18 is is pretty much in its original state, water all around the tee shot and approach, only safe harbor is long, and the chip back is not real fun.!

Maybe things have changed with the technology etc. but the 18th at Harbour Town is still a very tough finishing hole.

The 18th on the East Course at Admirals cove in Jupiter, Fl. from the back tees is extremely difficult.  A forced carry to the green over a natural canal 100 yards wide right up to the green.

From the back tees the hole plays approx 460yds.  with a large swale on the right side that causes the ball to run right.  If the tee shot is not placed perfectly down the left side or the left middle it is almost an impossible second shot.

The 18th at Charles River is a very tough finishing hole tournament or otherwise.

Fairways and Greens,

Dave

How about Phila. Cricket? Par four over 440 yards requiring an uphill tee shot over a ridge. The approach is downhill to a smallish green fronted by a creek (or crick if you are from Phila.) flanked with sand. The challenge is only intensified by members watching from the clubhouse pation situated behind the green! :-/
