I don't know where to begin, maybe it's the parallel comments that JF moved "3 mill. cubic yds of dirt" while at the same time "routed the holes over the contours of the hilly terrain"

Trump National Golf Club Opens

Donald J. Trump hit the ceremonial first drive on the morning of July 27 and proclaimed Trump National Golf Club open for play. The introduction of Trump's lavish golf project in Westchester County got under way with an exclusive 18-hole tournament whose field included Trump, celebrities, club members, corporate CEOs and the media. A gala reception followed.  
 
Trump predicts immediate recognition and high praise for his spectacular Jim Fazio designed layout. "This will be the best course in New York and it's going to be named Best New Course in the country by all the golf magazines." Trump enthused. "My main goal was to build a great golf course and we have exceeded that expectation here. Trump National blows Bethpage away." Trump, a member of Winged Foot Golf Club, is also confident that his private Trump National will surpass the storied Mamaroneck site and be a sought-after venue for a PGA Tour event or major championship.  
 
The golf project is Trump’s first construction endeavor in the county, even though he’s the largest private landowner in Westchester. Some 3 million cubic yards of Trump’s dirt were moved to build the course, which represents the largest excavation project ever undertaken in the county. The project involved the Trump Group remodeling the former Briar Hall Country Club and renaming it Trump National. The entire project will cost $120 million; other components include a pool, spa, tennis courts, a 42,000-square-foot clubhouse and 87 luxury condominiums. Trump expects to spend $15 million on the clubhouse, $30 million on the course, and $75 million on the residences. Memberships in the club are selling for $250,000.  
 
Course architect Jim Fazio, who also created highly regarded Trump International in Palm Beach, Fla., shaped the par-72, 7,291-yard layout and routed the holes over the contours of the hilly terrain. The huge greens were patterned after those of Augusta National. There are man-made lakes and brooks on many holes, and the property's old maple trees were preserved and integrated into the course. Other contributors were Jim's son, Tommy Fazio, and Vincent Stellio, an executive with the Trump Organization and the on-site project manager.  
 
Trump claims the course’s signature hole is the most expensive golf hole ever constructed in the U.S. The elaborate backdrop to the green at the par-3 13th hole is an impressive waterfall that flows over a 101-foot-high cliff of black granite. "There's never been a waterfall like this on a golf course," Trump proudly states. "We pump 5,000 gallons a minute." At the grand opening, local artist Susan Stillman presented Trump with a commemorative painting of the waterfall signature hole.

Yes, the apocalypse truly has arrived.  Waterfalls as a mark of greatness...wasn't that written in golf's "Revelation" as being the sign of the beast?

Oh well, hope to see it someday to form my own judgments but this press release is making me nauseous.  Has anyone here seen it already?

It will be interesting to see how many of Donald's friends from Winged Foot join the new club.  I am sure they will have a really good membership and the quality of the course speaks for itself though i wonder why Coore & Crenshaw did not get this job. Paul Turner, do we have pictures?

This just in: In order to re-claim the title of "Best Golf Course in New York", Bethpage State Park, with backing from Governor George Pataki, will be building a 102 ft waterfall behind the Black Course's 18th green. Pataki is quoted as saying, "No way Donald Trump is going to take the 2009 U.S. Open away from the People of the Great State of New York!"

Has anyone played it?  The signature hole at Shadow Creek is #17 and it has an artificial waterfall that is beautiful and unforgetable.  I have no idea if this course is good or not, but I will give it the benefit of the doubt until i hear otherwise.

I would have assumed this was fictional, only (a) no one could make this up, and (b) Trump has said similar things leading up to the opening. Just frightening.

I'm with Geoff, I can't believe those quotes, this has to be fictional. Speaking of Trump Nat'l, what ever happen to the GD panalist who proclaimed this would be the best of the class of 2002?

The big question, What fun loving good guy/gal that loves golf and has $$ isn't yet a member of some club in the NY metro area????

My mom always taught me to refrain from public self-aggrandizement, and to just let other people say good or bad things about you, because you'll get a more honest and useful assessment.

After reading Mr. Trump's own words about HIS course, what is there left to say?  Better than Shinnecock, NGLA, Winged Foot, Bethpage, Maidstone, Oak Hill, Quaker Ridge, Garden City, Fishers Island, Atlantic, Piping Rock, Fenway, Sagamore, and on and on....

Frankly, let's just call it the greatest course ever built, ride four horsemen over the "rolling hills" of Westchester County, and call it a night.

I played in the opening day of Trump National and reveled in his $7 million par-3. I'm writing about it now for Superintendent News - with a much deeper appreciation of Shadow Creek than I ever had before. Let's just say Trump National is very ambitious.

By the way, according to Trump, his Trump International GC in Palm Beach is already the no. 1 rated courses in all of Florida.

It must be fun to be a celebrity and say anything you want.

Hmmm, the best in NY.  Gee I wonder if Shinnecock and National are nervous, let's not forget Maidstone and Garden City, Quaker Ridge and Winged Foot too, Bethpage and Fishers as well.  Why not stop at NY, hell it may be the best damn course on the planet :o

Hey, I can remember when Rees Jones promised the owner of what is now Olde Kinderhook G.C. that he'd build him the best golf course in New York State.

Mr. Miyama wanted to hear the same thing from me, but I told him I had too much respect for Shinnecock and National to say that.  It didn't get me the job.  Last time I looked, though, Olde Kinderhook wasn't #1 anywhere.

Do yourself a big favor and go play Olde Kinderhook. I played the course about a year ago and it is indeed very well done.
In my opinion, I would place it within the top ten for the Empire State. Is it better than Shinnecock and NGLA. No. However, I don't automatically concede other positions within New York as so many others do.

The reason Olde Kinderhook is not rated higher is that so few people have actually taken the time to go to the immediate Albany area and play it. Many just make the assumption that if something is in the Albany area it really can't be on the same level as the courses in and around NYC.

Olde Kinderhook doesn't need high profile PR (Trump, etc.). It stands on its own merits and from what I have heard from other respected GCA contributors they believe it's a solid effort and superb course.

The old Briar Hall golf course was a sporty little course with some good holes.  Nothing special but an enjoyable place to spend a morning or afternoon.  Given the great neighbors, it was not a place that was in high demand to play.

After a most enjoyable round at Sleepy Hollow last year, a group of us drove the short distance to take a look at Trump National.  I believe a few photos were taken.  The place has several road crossings and it is HIGHLY shaped.  It will be a difficult course but it looks to be one of those play it this way or else type of courses.  One hole with a double fairway split by a stream (artificial?) had no reasonable play to one of the supposed options.  In viewing about three holes I didn't see hope for Trump National cracking the top 25 in the state yet alone #1.  I'm anxiously awaiting Brad Klein's review in Superintendent News.

Olde Kinderhook on the other hand is a really fine golf course.  I liked it better then Huntsville and that's somewhere about #55 on GW modern list.  Rees was asked to build a course that could host the US Open and I believe the owner got what he asked for.  Its also the most natural course built by Rees that I've played and that includes Ocean Forest. People should go up there to play it. The bunkering is quite unique for a Ree Jones course.
