Scott....Forrest undoubtedly will bring a little Stranz to a project, as he was so intimately involved in the courses that were built by the two of them.

Forrest has still been active since Mike passed away.
His construction company has been involved with two projects at Love Golf Design...Ricefields and the Newark CC.

He also has worked with John Fought on a project in Utah.

A talented guy.

Hidden Valley, Columbia SC  redo.....Sept 2008

Mike,

I've played a couple times at Hidden Valley maybe ten years ago. Back then I don't think they even had fairway irrigation, it tended to be sandy hardpan tee to green with little patches of Bermuda during the cooler/wetter months of the year. A few years back they were rumored to have upgraded conditions somewhat but I'm thrilled to hear you are redoing the course.

My recollection is it was a very promising piece of land with some interesting vistas and a couple of fairly dramatic shots on hilly terrain on the back nine. Plus it's sitting on a couple hundred feet of sand and most of the course should drain almost like linksland. If you find yourself in or around Columbia at some point I'd love to buy you lunch and hear about your work at Hidden Valley.

P.S. Perhaps more properly you should label it as Gaston, SC. Wouldn't want to slight my cousins who live out there.

David Kidd's Tetherow in Bend, Or may open in '08 or '09.

Wow, that routing has a whole lot of housing lots on the slicer's side of fairways - might need to issue hard hats unless there are major setback requirements!  Not exactly a core routing.....

Mike Nuzzo's Wolf Point will be finishing up next spring.
We still have quite a bit of tidying up to do on the perimeter of the course and a few more holes to plant. here are a few pics of some grass.

The first is of the 17th hole-440 yard par-4 with picture taken from the 18th looking back across the 17th green.
Fwy grass is 4 weeks old and green was sprigged 8 days ago.

Here is a pic of the 3rd hole. Par 5, green is lighter colored area in the distance. Fwy turf is about 6 weeks with the green also 8 days old.

Here are a couple of the 2nd. The first is taken across the line of play about 150 out and the second taken from the green looking back.

The last is of our 7th green

Love Golf Design has a few opening;

The Dunes Course, Cabo San Lucas....an 18 hole resort course that should open in mid 08.

Mid '08? You guys are killing me... can't wait that long to see the finished product.

You would think things take longer in Mexico?!! ;)

Greg....we are still praying for paspalum sprigs to fill our 35 acre, center pivot crop circle sod farm that you may have  noticed while on the flight path towards the West Coast.

I have also noticed that while in Meheeco I spend about twice as much time to get half as much done. ;D....good people though.

Refreshing to see a 9 hole course in the works from anyone.

More of these would be great.  Folks don't have 5 hours to play 18 anymore.

Bill McBride,

Is David Kidd a lefty or a hooker or something?  It does indeed look like the bulk of the damage would come from slicers.  As a world class hooker of the ball myself, while there are a few holes I would be worried about breaking glass on once all the houses are up, it appears most of the time I'd end up on another fairway or between them.

That's kind of nice as I realized this summer that one of my favorite courses in the area offers the hooker of the ball the chance for penalty strokes for OB or lost ball on no less than 12 holes, while the slicer enjoys this possibility on exactly zero holes, albeit with the chance of hitting into water on two holes.

I've noticed most courses are this way, though typically not in such early Nicklaus proportions.  Maybe Kidd is just doing his small part to bring some balance to the universe ;D

Encanterra, a private residential course, is opening soon in Queen Creek, AZ. This is the far East Valley area of PHX. Designed by Tom Lehman,  the course is a "core" design with all the housing on the perimeter.

Here is an article about Wicked Pony and Tetherow near Bend, Oregon.

http://www.bendbulletin.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071024/SPORTS05/710240385

'In fact, Tetherow, which has set a June 20 opening date, has already seeded its fairways and greens."

Which one are you looking forward to seeing?

Here is another course opening this week in North Carolina designed by David Johnson Golf Design. I will have to check it out when I visit Tobacco Road.

In Colorado, Norman's Cornerstone either just opened or is about to open, Engh's Harmony Club is supposed to open this year and Four Mile Ranch is scheduled for next year, Nicklaus has Cougar Canyon, and C&C opened Colorado Golf Club this year.  There are probably more that I'm not mentioning.

I know that Tom Doak has mentioned the rebuilding of the course at Mira Vista up in Denver. Any schedule on that? Also, if I remember correctly, Forrest Richardson said something about being involved in a project just west of Engh's Pradera club, I believe called the Anthology club? Any word on when we can expect this one?

Also, has anyone heard anything regarding the new nine holes at Carne? And as to which course, between Tetherow and Wicked Pony, I'm looking forward to seeing, why not both? I have friends up there who'll let me sleep on their floor...........

It was supposed to be seeded this autumn and open for play next autumn, but I don't think that's happening now, for whatever reason.

The few new holes that I did see looked fantastic, though.

For all of the fly-fishing fans out there, Orvis Shorefox Golf Course will be opening in the Summer of 2009. A stream restoration of the upper Colorado River to promote habitat for the native Cutthroat Trout will be the centerpiece, but a Tripp Davis golf course should be a pretty good one.

We have a renovation called Water's Edge CC in Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia opening next spring.  It is a Buddy Loving Jr. course opened in 1985 and the charge was to preserve the original character of the golf course.  That meant preserving some semblance of the standard 70's/80's look, a far cry from what GCAers think of when discussing restoration and a far cry from my typical approach.  We solved some very basic playability and strategic problems in the process, though.  The first two shots are a before/after of #11 (par three).

This is the second LA of #13, a long uphill par five.  Before, the hazards were blind and not in play.  We created central carry hazards which are a major strategic element for the hole now:

Here is a bunker on #17.  The typical bunker style of the era is one of high flashed, serpentine shapes cut directly into mounds instead of around mounds.   This one was my favorite of the style we were charged with:
