Aerial of the Day #203 (and 204) - 20 Sep 2002
« on: September 20, 2002, 05:57:51 AM »
Just a note that I will be out of town on Monday and Tuesday
and our resident "substitute teacher" will be filling in on
those two days.

For #1, was someone smoking something when this one was
originally rated as high as it was?  Kinda scary.  We've seen
this before, with the tees and squiggly bunkers.

Fro today's stumper, we'll go back to another B&W one this
week.  A hint:  courses don't have to be long to be good or fun.

As for course #1...it looks like a giant aerial "Rorschach Test"!

I went on a golf vacation here a few years ago and was disappointed....spent a lot of "green", but left feeling "blue".

I wonder if the "image capture" of #1
was taken during the tournament?

There seems to be alot of grandstands
set up around 18 green, and just look
at the corporate tent set up around the
1st tee area!!! :o

Another famous course with the same nickname as #1
doesn't quite live up to the nickname anymore with
technology of today.  Does the same apply here?  Is it not as
beastly as it once was?

For #2, if you know the name of well-known tennis ball
service machines, then they are quite the delicacy around here.

Speaking of service, some who are secret have roamed this
course for sure.

Got #2 from your clues. Fast rounds are the norm at this
place. I've wanted to check this place out for a long time.

Ran raves about it.

Is #1 the "Virginia Slims" for the men?

Do a bunch of retirees surround this course?  Oy!

For #2, if in the area, it would be prudent to play this course
at this juncture.

Is this town a "Hyannis" of sorts?

Where is Jack for his comments?  Or Michael Moore?

Got them both ... either I'm getting smart or the
clues were easier this time ...

Are those waters Shark infested?

At this tournament, don't they have a spot for
the helicopters to land?

Thanks for the good clue on #2
I finally got it.  What a nice weekend
getaway that would be to stay at the
accompanying bed and breakfast!! :)

I don't see a "cape" hole anywhere
and I wonder if country singer "Travis"
Tritt plays there?

This has to be the shortest AOTD to date.

Rob,

Country singer Randy Travis would also have sufficed.  It's
even the appropriate last name.

Dave,

I'm getting labor contractions over that one!  Groan!

Dave, my wife was a Tylenol rep, so I stick with it instead of those non-steroidal anti inflamatories that are hawked here.

I'm sure you've all seen #1 on TV in the winter.  Nicklaus
always made a point to play here.

If you play #2, you'll see 1000 points of light and "get it".
And I guess do some fishing.

This is only the 2nd AOTD from this state.

For #1, after a former sponsor of the pro tournament played here backed-out, I'm guessing they just had to leave the stands there, since they didn't have the moving trucks to take them away.

#1 is of course, the Blue Monster course at Doral Resort &
Spa, in Miami, FL, designed by Dick Wilson.  Ray Flowd did
renovation work in 1996 and the resort's teaching guru and
Golf Channel staple, Jim McLean, did bunker work in 1999.
Officially the "Blue" course, and dubbed a "monster" long ago
due to it's difficulty, it has hosted the PGA event since I
believe it's inception in the early 60's.  Currently titled the
Genuity Championship, the recent name was the Doral-Ryder Open.

Doral has 4 other courses, one of which is the fairly new
Great White course, by Greg Norman, which was a previous AOTD.

here's the resort's web site, which has almost no info on the course:

http://www.doralresort.com/golf/courses.asp

and the PGA Tour's course page, with hole-by-hole
descriptions and more info including details on the recent work:

http://www.pgatour.com/tournaments/r008/course.html

clues include:

"smoking", "Virginia Slims" = cigarettes, specifically Doral
brand.  V.S. sponsors (or used to) a slew of women's tennis
tournaments.

"scary", previous famous AOTD with same nickname that is
not as scary as it used to be, "beastly" = "Monster" and
Oakland Hills

"spent a lot of green" = Doral is expensive to play, usually
over $200.

"blue"

"tournament", "on TV in winter"

retirees around here= S. Fla.  Oy! refers to high number of
Jewish retirees in area  (all stereotypes, I apologize).

"epidoral"

"former sponsor"..."didn't move out" = Ryder

#2 is Cape Arundel, in Kennebunkport, ME, designed by
Walter Travis.  It is under 6000 yards, making it, as someone
said above, probably the shortest of the AOTDs to date.

Ran has mentioned it a few times as a hidden gem.

clues include:

not a long course

"well-known tennis ball service machines" = delicacy served
up here = "Lob-sters"

"secret service roamed the course", "prudent at this
juncture", "1000 points of light" all refer to President Bush
(mostly "Dad"), who have their vacation home in
Kennebunkport and have played Cape Arundel many times.
Bush also known for his love of "fishing" here.

"Hyannis of sorts" refers to Kennedy family vacation home
vs. Bush family vacation home.

"Cape"

"Travis"

"Jack" =GCA poster "Mainely" Jack

GCA poster "Michael Moore" is from Maine also.

First AOTD from Maine was Samoset Resort.

Scott never translates my clues  ;)  but if anyone is interested Raymond Floyd appears in an Advil commercial from Doral, hence my mention of Tylenol and NSAIDS.
