Florida golf and the Moorings

 ;)The season has arrived for some great golf in Florida !
 
Alice and Pete Dye have given some of us old timers an opportunity to get home in two, and work on our short game, which is the name of golf as it exists today.

Why have we not developed more courses with this concept ?

I think the answer is that 4300y "executive" courses don't sell real estate today.The new "active adult" communities that are being built today have regulation courses but are not rated and sloped high and have a set of tees around 5500-5800y for those who want to play forward. By the way, The Moorings in Vero Beach looks good:

you have a course that meets this description right in your backyard, that is assuming you live near your other club in ardmore.

R/G  Paxon Hollow is a great little layout.  Played there years ago with George Rowbottam, when it was White Manor CC.  I still have the shoe trees to prove it !

But the Moorings play 4434 from the tips, and PH is 5679.  Rating/Slope @ M 62.3/109.

Slight difference in scenery, too !

i agree that the scenery looks awesome at moorings.
the two courses yardages are alot diff, but so is the par.   4434 yards - par 64 vs. 5679 yards - par 71 from back tees is not all that much different.  you should come by and play paxon again when you get a chance. Jim Wagner has done some great bunker work in recent years.

paxon's slope (67.6/122) is a good bit higher than moorings.

I played Paxon when I helped finish ACE Club.

I am glad they have done some bunker work....it was needed.  In fact...I called the supt to find out if they were getting ready to do any work at the time.

I really enjoyed the course.....it was tight but that is the kind of course I worked on first.

#8 could be made a redan with just a little work.


I also remember the course had some really neat bunker complexes.

Francis Warner, then secretary of the Golf Association of Philadelphia, was involved with the design of the new course.

...and he did a good job


Pictures of the "gradual restoration"......and they redid the bar....so I guess they have their priorities in order....

#8 used to be a 210 yd par three with the tee directly behind the 7th green.  probably a pretty good hole.  it can not be restored unless you grt rid of the current 4th.
