maidstone - wow! pure golf at its best.

piping rock -as advertised - shooter's hole by hole preview set the stage and it did not disappoint

fox chapel - a very good raynor course that does not get talked about much

kiawah -ocean course - played it in my early golf days right after it opened - so lets assume it was my 1st time this year - generally i am not a pete dye fan in comparison to cbm / raynor /flynn,  etc - but walked away very impressed.

Did you see where it said "DOUBLE OOPS".   That's refers to the fact that it's not the first time I've played Jeffersonville.

Instead, it's the first time I played Jeff with Kyle Harris and Doug Braunsdorf.  ;)

I well remember that morning, followed by a lot of fun at Applebrook in the afternoon, with special walking guests Bill Dow, Tom Paul, and playing accompanied by that third...what was his name?   Rihc or something?   ;)

Barnbougle Dunes was the best course I played for the first time this year.  

I also really enjoyed Woodlands, Peninsula and Kingston Heath (all in VIC Australia) which I played for the first time too.

Yale (Thanks Mike Sweeney and Geoffrey Childs)-  Really blew me away.  This was the absolute worst round I played all summer and I could not help having an incredible time.  Easily my favorite course (from a limited sampling).  

The Knoll-  Went here because of my experience at Yale.  I don't know what it is about the "engineered style", but I love it.

Inwood CC (Thanks David)-  Totally charming layout, where the wind is a heavy factor.  Loved how a flat site can be so interesting.  Also, my first time playing with a caddy.

What a 2006! New son (April 20th) and some great golf.

I didn't see a lot of new courses this year as I played so much at my new home course and was very content not to roam too far.

Best Played:

Oakmont:  Amazing!  A must play/study.  
Gibson Island:  sporty and fun (and Raynor at that ;D )


Walked:

Maidstone: incredibly good club and course

Lawsonia Links, without a doubt.  I find it hard to justify going to Kohler and paying top dollar when you can pay $49.00 for a truly awesome experience in architecture which I found more enjoyable and interesting than Whistling Straits.

Stock Farm-Wound up being a good trade, my jet for a golfing weekend.   :D

Gulph Mills- Longtime friend, a member at both GMGC and MGC, first time I requested Gulph Mills, well worth it.

Bel-Air I will stick with LACC in future, nontheless I did see Gabrielle Reese swing.

Sand Hills,Wild Horse- enough said on this site. thank goodness for the North platte jetport.

Gullane 2 & 3 - all first time visits.

Perhaps Sandwich shades it from Rye, I'm not sure. Pennard & New Zealand the most fun to play.

Cypress Point - What can you say!
Mayacama - A very enjoyable test of golf.  Fair and fun
Old Memorial - A very pleasant experience.  Good caddy and among the best putting surfaces I've played in Florida

Mark - I played NSW once and Barnbougle three times.  Both are marvelous courses but I found the green complexes with their rich variety of requried shots more my liking.

Also, I think Gibson Island is a Raynor not a CBM course.

Have to admit a bit of envy - was lucky to break away for a long weekend to get to Bandon. I can't imagine being able to find the time to truck around the country a.la. Sean Leary and others at this point in my life :)

Yes, I liked Gibson Island.  It is down to 9 holes from the original 18 and planned 36.  It is a Raynor, I don't think Macdonald had anything to do with the design although he clearly had an immense influence on Raynor.

I'm sure there are some bunkers missing (though not as many as at Fishers Island where I believe they remain unbuilt as planned) and the conditioning is a bit rough.  However, there's some interesting greens and greensites.  It was an unexpected bit of fun.  Far from great but for what it is now, I had a lot of fun there and would go back.

Daryl, the pro at Bristol Harbor now is Greg Mulhern, who's been there maybe 5 years. And I agree with Mike, 17 at Bristol is a great hole.
