I have limited exposure to Pinehurst # 2.
I began playing about 6 to 12 rounds a year, begining in the 60's through the 70's.   Lately, my trips have been sporadic and not extended.

The Pinehurst # 2 that I knew, from the 60's, always had crowned or turtle backed greens.

Hence, I don't buy into the theory of construction defects accounting for the convex nature of those greens.

Thanks for the link..wow, that was quite a discussion in 04!  It seems like everyone who had a position chimed in at that time and I believe, as far as I am concerned, the story is complete enough for me.
